Coral Bay Anchorage Guide

Also known as: Corallia Beach, Coral Beach, Coral Bay Paphos

Coral Bay is a popular sandy beach bay north of Paphos, offering free anchoring in 3–6m over clean sand with good holding. Protected from the N and E by flanking headlands; exposed to the W and SW. The afternoon westerly sea breeze builds to 15–20kt daily in summer — set the anchor well before midday. Anchor outside the summer swim zone markers. The beach is excellent; shops, restaurants, and hotels are directly behind the sand. Best used as a day anchorage or an early morning stop on the way north to the Akamas — overnight comfort is limited in the afternoon westerly swell that persists through the night.

The Anchorage

Popular sandy bay anchorage north of Paphos in 3–6m over clean sand. Good holding throughout. Protected from N, NE, E, and SE by the headlands framing the bay; exposed to W and SW. The afternoon westerly sea breeze builds to 15–20kt daily May–September — arrive before 09:00 and set the anchor well before conditions deteriorate. A clear swim zone is established inshore during summer — anchor outside the swim zone markers. The water is crystal clear over sand. A comfortable day anchorage; overnight comfort is limited in the W afternoon swell, particularly in July and August. The bay has direct beach access by dinghy. Shops, restaurants, and hotels are directly behind the beach. 80m alarm radius reflects full scope deployment in 4–5m sand with W/SW afternoon exposure.

Setting Your Anchor

The bottom at Coral Bay is primarily sand with reliable holding when properly set.

  1. Check for Posidonia seagrass before dropping the anchor — snorkel or use a waterproof camera to verify a sand patch. Posidonia is EU-protected throughout Cypriot waters; fines apply for damage.
  2. Anchor in 36m. Cyprus tidal range is negligible (<30cm) — no tidal correction needed. Wind-driven sea level variation up to 0.5m possible in strong onshore conditions.
  3. Deploy at least 5:1 scope (30m chain at 6m depth). Set firmly in reverse — 30–60 seconds at moderate throttle.
  4. Use the scope calculator to confirm adequate chain.

Recommended anchor types: Rocna, Mantus, Spade, Delta.

Overnight Anchoring & Anchor Alarm

Overnight stays at Coral Bay are best in settled conditions — the anchorage is exposed to W and SW winds. The key overnight consideration on the Paphos west coast is the afternoon westerly sea breeze — builds 15–20kt from midday, creating swell at west-facing anchorages.

Set your GPS anchor alarm to 80m radius before going below. 80m radius in 4–5m sand. Good holding. Exposed W/SW to afternoon westerly sea breeze 15–20kt. Anchor outside swim zone. Day anchorage primary use.

Best April–October for day stops; April, May, and October are the most comfortable overnight options when the sea breeze is less reliable. June–August the bay is very busy with beach tourism and the afternoon westerly makes overnight stays uncomfortable. Day anchorage only in the peak of summer. September offers a pleasant combination of warm water and reduced beach crowds. The bay is exposed and not recommended for overnight use in any westerly conditions.

Navigation Hazards

  • Afternoon westerly sea breeze 15–20kt daily May–Sep — exposed W/SW; bay becomes uncomfortable to untenable from midday; depart or set a well-dug anchor before the sea breeze arrives
  • Summer swim zone — anchor outside marked zone boundaries; zone is actively managed in July–August
  • Day anchorage only in summer — overnight comfort poor in the residual westerly swell; plan to leave before darkness in July–August
  • Beach boats, jet skis, and water sports activity from the beach in peak season — maintain a safe distance from the swim area

Rules & Regulations

  • EU member (not Schengen): No customs for EU boats from EU ports. Non-EU boats: Paphos is a port of entry (check hours); Larnaca Marina is the preferred 24/7 entry. Fly yellow Q flag. EES biometric for non-EU crew since October 2025.
  • Anchoring fee: Free
  • Restrictions: Anchor outside summer swim zone markers — strictly enforced in July–August. Afternoon westerly 15–20kt from midday — day anchorage in summer. Posidonia may be present in deeper areas — anchor in central sand.

Skipper's Tips

  1. Arrive before 09:00 in summer to anchor in calm conditions and set the hook before the sea breeze builds
  2. Excellent beach landing by dinghy — restaurants and bars behind the beach are good value
  3. Best spring and autumn day stop — April, May, and October offer the most comfortable anchoring conditions
  4. Useful waypoint on the Paphos–Latsi–Akamas coastal route
  5. Swim zone markers appear June–August — anchor well clear and to seaward of the line

A note on this guide: Data has been researched from multiple sailing sources and is provided in good faith. Conditions — depth, holding, regulations — can change. Always check forecasts and current official charts before visiting. Use a GPS anchor alarm and never rely solely on a guide for navigational decisions.
