Best Anchorages near Paphos & West Coast

About Paphos & the West Coast
Paphos Harbour — Port of Entry
Paphos Harbour is Cyprus's western port of entry — vessels up to 15m LOA and 2m draft can be accommodated. Fuel, water, chandlery, and fish tavernas are on the quayside. Customs and immigration are available but not 24/7 — Larnaca Marina remains the preferred 24/7 entry point for non-EU boats arriving outside business hours. VHF Ch 16 for port authority contact.
Akamas Blue Lagoon — Crown Jewel
The Blue Lagoon (Chamili Bay) at the tip of Akamas Peninsula is the most beautiful anchorage on the west coast — turquoise water, sandy bottom, crystal visibility. The peninsula is a Natura 2000 and national park area. Anchoring is prohibited in swimming zones and MPA core areas. Anchor in sand patches only — snorkel first to verify. Arrive early in July–August as day-tripper boats from Latsi fill the bay.
Afternoon Westerly Sea Breeze
The west coast is dominated by a daily afternoon westerly sea breeze building to 15–20 knots from midday May–September. Most west-facing anchorages (Coral Bay, Sea Caves, Petra tou Romiou) become uncomfortable in the afternoon. Plan to be anchored by 11:00 and depart before 09:00 for passages north or south. The Latsi and Paphos harbours provide good shelter when the afternoon breeze builds.
Latsi — Sailing Village
Latsi (Latchi) fishing harbour on Chrysochou Bay is the most practical overnight stop between Paphos and the Akamas Blue Lagoon. Floating pontoons with water and power, fish tavernas directly on the quay, and provisions in Polis town 2nm inland. The harbour is well protected from S/SE/NE but open to NW — check forecasts before committing overnight in unsettled conditions.
Akamas Peninsula — Natura 2000 MPA Restrictions
The Akamas Peninsula is an EU Natura 2000 site and national park. Anchoring is prohibited in swimming and marine park zones — marked by red/yellow buoys in the Blue Lagoon area. Posidonia seagrass is EU-protected throughout Cypriot waters. Always snorkel to verify a sand patch before dropping anchor. Use mooring buoys where provided. The nesting beach of the loggerhead turtle (Caretta caretta) at Lara Bay is strictly off-limits to landing — approach by sea at distance only and do not disturb.
