The Anchorage

Anchorage in the lee of Pomos Point on the north coast of Cyprus (Republic of Cyprus — not to be confused with the north coast under TRNC administration). Mixed sand and pebble in 4–10m. Fair holding — snorkel to find sand patches among the pebble. Protected from S, SE, and SW by the hinterland topography; exposed to N, NW, and NE across the open sea. The north coast of Cyprus is relatively unexplored by sailing yachts. Pomos fishing village has a small jetty — do not obstruct. Note: this area is within the Republic of Cyprus but is very close to the Kokkina (Erenköy) British Sovereign Base Area border further east — check chart for exact boundaries. Seldom visited. 100m alarm radius for open bay.

Setting Your Anchor

The bottom at Pomos Point Anchorage is primarily sand and pebble with variable holding that requires extra attention.

  1. Check for Posidonia seagrass — Posidonia meadows are extensive throughout Chrysochou Bay and the Akamas coast. Snorkel to verify a clear sand patch before dropping anchor. EU-protected; fines apply for damage.
  2. Observe turtle beach restrictions — if anchoring near Lara Bay or Toxeftra Beach in June–September, maintain a 200m exclusion zone from the beach. No deck lights toward the beach at night.
  3. Anchor in 410m. Cyprus tidal range is negligible (<30cm). Deploy 50m chain at 10m depth (5:1 scope).
  4. Set firmly in reverse — 30–60 seconds at moderate throttle. Use the scope calculator to confirm adequate chain.

Recommended anchor types: Rocna, Mantus, Spade.

Overnight Anchoring & Anchor Alarm

Overnight stays at Pomos Point Anchorage are best in settled conditions — the anchorage is exposed to N and NW and NE winds. On the Akamas coast, you are far from assistance — typically 5–12nm from the nearest harbour. The afternoon westerly sea breeze builds daily from midday throughout summer, reaching F3–5 by afternoon. Plan arrivals for the morning calm.

Set your GPS anchor alarm to 100m radius before going below. 100m radius in 5–8m. Fair holding — mixed sand/pebble; snorkel to verify sand patch. N/NW/NE exposure to open sea. North coast — exposed to northerly swell. Fair-weather only.

May–October in settled conditions only. Only for experienced sailors comfortable with remote, exposed anchorages. Excellent in flat summer conditions (July–August) when the sea is like glass and the north coast of Cyprus can be fully appreciated.

Navigation Hazards

  • N/NW/NE exposure to open sea — north coast swell possible; fair-weather only; monitor forecast carefully
  • Mixed sand/pebble bottom — fair holding requires careful anchor placement and snorkelling to find sand
  • Check chart for restricted zones near Kokkina to the east
  • Very remote — no services within 12nm; fully self-sufficient required

Rules & Regulations

  • EU member (not Schengen) — Paphos is the nearest port of entry: Paphos Harbour is the nearest 24/7 customs and immigration point for this region (22–28nm south). Non-EU boats must clear here first before anchoring in Chrysochou Bay or Akamas waters. Fly yellow Q flag.
  • Anchoring fee: Free
  • Restrictions: Fair-weather only — N/NW/NE exposure. Fair holding on mixed bottom — snorkel to verify sand patch. Check chart for restricted zones near Kokkina to the east. Do not obstruct the Pomos fishing jetty.
  • Akamas National Park: Anchoring near turtle nesting beaches (Lara Bay, Toxeftra Beach) is prohibited within 200m June–September. No deck lights toward beach at night. No overnight camping on beaches. Posidonia EU-protected throughout — anchor in sand patches only.

Skipper's Tips

  1. One of the least-visited anchorages on the Cyprus coast — genuine exploratory sailing
  2. The north coast of Cyprus (Republic side) is largely undiscovered by sailing yachts — an interesting passage
  3. Pomos village, though tiny, has a distinctive character typical of remote Cypriot fishing communities
  4. Latchi Harbour (12nm W) is the safety fallback if any northerly develops

A note on this guide: Data has been researched from multiple sailing sources and is provided in good faith. Conditions — depth, holding, regulations — can change. Always check forecasts and current official charts before visiting. Use a GPS anchor alarm and never rely solely on a guide for navigational decisions.

Sleep peacefully at Pomos Point Anchorage

On the Akamas coast you are far from assistance. Safety Anchor Alarm monitors your GPS position continuously — essential when anchored in remote Akamas coves where a dragging anchor in the night could take you onto rocks or a turtle nesting beach.
