Recommended Anchor Alarm Radius

70m

70m for the Grenaa outer anchorage in 2–5m. Full Kattegat exposure from E through S means the anchorage should only be used in settled westerly conditions. The harbour is the reliable option — use it unless weather is firmly settled.

Setting Your Anchor

  1. 1.Check eelgrass chart (DKSOS app or Navionics) — anchor only in central channel, away from fjord shore vegetation
  2. 2.Use 5:1 scope minimum — East Jutland fjords are almost tideless (0.2m tidal range); scope is about depth and holding
  3. 3.Remember: anchoring is tolerated for 1 night only in unoccupied natural anchorages — it is not a legal right in Denmark
  4. 4.Set your anchor alarm to 70m before sleeping — check bridge clearances if proceeding upstream

About This Anchorage

Grenaa is the main ferry port on the Djursland peninsula — ferries to Varberg (Sweden), and to Anholt island. The town itself is a working port community rather than a tourist destination, but it has good services and is the natural starting point for passages to Anholt island (25nm offshore) in the central Kattegat. The outer anchorage is only practical in settled westerly conditions — the Kattegat exposure is significant. The sandy beaches north and south of the harbour are pleasant in calm weather.

Skipper's Tips

  • Grenaa is the main departure point for Anholt island (25nm) — plan a suitable weather window; Kattegat can be rough
  • The Kattegat Centre (Grenaa) is a working marine research centre with shark tanks and touch pools — good for families
  • Stock up on provisions in Grenaa before heading to Anholt — the island shop is limited
  • The Djursland peninsula has excellent cycling routes — the 'Naturpark Randers Fjord' route connects Grenaa with Randers (50km)
