Recommended Anchor Alarm Radius

50m

50m for this extremely sheltered fjord in 2–4m. The fjord is narrow — 45m at its narrowest — so swing room is limited. Set anchor carefully and verify the swinging arc will not bring the bow within the eelgrass fringe. Reduce to 35m in calm conditions. The main hazard is powerboat wash in the narrow section — not an anchor-dragging risk, but potentially uncomfortable.

Setting Your Anchor

  1. 1.Check eelgrass chart (DKSOS app or Navionics) — anchor only in central channel, away from fjord shore vegetation
  2. 2.Use 5:1 scope minimum — East Jutland fjords are almost tideless (0.2m tidal range); scope is about depth and holding
  3. 3.Remember: anchoring is tolerated for 1 night only in unoccupied natural anchorages — it is not a legal right in Denmark
  4. 4.Set your anchor alarm to 50m before sleeping — check bridge clearances if proceeding upstream

About This Anchorage

Mariager Fjord is Denmark's longest fjord at 30km, and at its narrowest point near Hadsund just 45m wide — a truly remarkable natural feature. The fjord cuts through the East Jutland landscape in a series of bends flanked by steep wooded slopes. The town of Mariager (population 2,500) at the western end is one of the prettiest small towns in Denmark — half-timbered houses, roses growing over every facade, and an air of unchanged tranquility. The mud in the fjord is among the deepest and finest-quality holding in all of Danish waters. Powerboat wash in the narrow section can be the main comfort issue. A steam railway runs along the fjord valley — the Mariager-Handest railway (a preserved line) runs in summer.

Skipper's Tips

  • Mariager town is one of Denmark's hidden gems — the rose gardens around the half-timbered houses are extraordinary in June and July
  • The Mariager-Handest steam railway (MHVJ) runs in summer along the fjord valley — a beautiful 14km journey with vintage locomotives
  • At the narrowest point near Hadsund (45m wide) you can almost shake hands with someone on either bank — an extraordinary geographical experience
  • The fjord mud is legendary among Danish sailors for holding quality — set the anchor, run it back hard, and it will not move in any conditions
  • Combine the fjord with a cycle along the valley road — car-free sections give beautiful views
