Recommended Anchor Alarm Radius

60m

60m for the Aalborg Limfjord anchorage in 2–5m mud. Commercial shipping traffic and the 26m fixed bridge clearance are the critical hazards here. Anchor well clear of the main shipping channel and verify mast height versus bridge clearance before planning transit westward.

Setting Your Anchor

  1. 1.Check eelgrass chart (DKSOS app or Navionics) — anchor only in central channel, away from fjord shore vegetation
  2. 2.Use 5:1 scope minimum — East Jutland fjords are almost tideless (0.2m tidal range); scope is about depth and holding
  3. 3.Remember: anchoring is tolerated for 1 night only in unoccupied natural anchorages — it is not a legal right in Denmark
  4. 4.Set your anchor alarm to 60m before sleeping — check bridge clearances if proceeding upstream

About This Anchorage

Aalborg is the fourth largest city in Denmark (population 115,000) and the gateway to the Limfjord from the east. The Limfjord connects the Kattegat to the North Sea — 180km of sheltered inland water — but the fixed bridge at Aalborg (26m clearance) limits the westward transit to vessels with masts under 26m. The city has a vibrant cultural life — the Aalborg Carnival (May, largest in Scandinavia), the Utzon Center (designed by Jørn Utzon of Sydney Opera House fame), and the historic Budolfi Cathedral. The anchorage in the Limfjord provides good shelter. The area is famous for the Aalborg Akvavit distillery.
