About This Anchorage

Hvalpsund is one of the most scenic sections of the Limfjord — a narrow channel between steep wooded hills where the water runs with a noticeable tidal current. The ancient Hvalpsund–Sundsøre car ferry has operated since 1925 and remains one of the shortest fjord crossings in Denmark. The anchorage north of the narrows is sheltered from north and east, with good holding on mud and sand. The current in the narrows (0.5–1.0 kt) means the boat lies to current rather than wind — plan scope accordingly. The small harbour at Hvalpsund has limited visitors' berths. The village has a bakery and small shop. The hillsides are covered in beech forest — the scenery is unusual for flat Denmark.

Skipper's Tips

  • The Hvalpsund–Sundsøre ferry is one of the most charming crossings in Denmark — take the dinghy aboard for DKK 20 and cross for the views back to the anchorage
  • The beech forest walk above Hvalpsund takes 1 hour — the views over the Limfjord are the best inland views in northern Jutland
  • The current in the narrows reverses with the Limfjord's east–west water level gradient — check direction before anchoring
  • Excellent birdwatching: the wooded hillsides host great spotted woodpecker, treecreeper, and marsh tit
  • Combine with Livø island (8nm north): anchor at Livø, transit Hvalpsund, continue to Løgstør Bredning

June–August. The current and ferry make this more of a scenic transit stop than an overnight destination — though it is perfectly comfortable for 1–2 nights.
