Recommended Anchor Alarm Radius

70m

70m allows for typical wind-driven swing in this open reach. The bredning has more fetch than the narrower fjord sections — in southerly conditions above F4 increase to 90m and monitor. The mud holding is reliable but check set with engine astern.

About This Anchorage

Løgstør Bredning is the oyster capital of Scandinavia — the broad shallow reaches west of the town contain both the world-renowned native European flat oyster (Ostrea edulis, protected and recovering) and the now-ubiquitous wild Pacific oyster (Crassostrea gigas, free to harvest for personal use). The anchorage in 2–5m over mud and sand is comfortable in all but southerly winds. The town of Løgstør has a good marina, excellent restaurants specialising in oyster dishes, and the historic Frederik VII Canal lock (1861) through the Løgstør Grunde. The Limfjord Museum in town covers the history of the fjord's fishing and oyster industry. A classic Limfjord overnight.

Anchoring Rules

Anchoring fee
Free (anchoring); marina fee approx DKK 150/night
Permit required
No

Restrictions: Eelgrass beds — anchor in sandy/muddy channels only; draught limit 2.0m; speed limit 5kt within 300m of shore; oyster foraging for personal consumption permitted (not commercial); Frederik VII Canal — check VHF 16 before transiting.

Hazards

  • !Open to south across 3nm fetch — uncomfortable in southerly above F4; marina is better option in S winds
  • !Eelgrass beds marked on charts — anchor in sandy/muddy channel only
  • !Draught limit 2.0m — Løgstør Grunde shoal to east (minimum 2.5m in buoyed channel only)
  • !Oyster shells on mudflat — anchor retrieval can be fouled by shell debris
  • !Fog common in summer mornings — anchor alarm essential

Skipper's Tips

  • The Pacific oyster harvest is free — dinghy to the exposed sandbank at LW and collect from the mussel lines and wild beds
  • Visit the Limfjord Museum (Fregatvej 3) for the history of this unique waterway — covers Viking era to modern fishing
  • The Frederik VII Canal lock (1861) is historic — the lock-keeper will let you transit for a small fee; the Løgstør Grunde shoal outside is treacherous
  • Best time to anchor: arrive afternoon, explore by dinghy at LW to see the oyster beds exposed, dine ashore on fresh oysters
  • East of the anchorage: the Vejlerne bird reserve is one of Denmark's most important wader habitats — binoculars essential
