About This Anchorage
Matsalu National Park is one of Europe's most important wetland nature reserves — a vast coastal landscape of reed beds, floodplain meadows, and shallow bays that hosts extraordinary concentrations of migratory birds. Over 325 bird species have been recorded, including the largest autumn gatherings of barnacle geese in Estonia (50,000+ birds in September), massive flocks of whooper and mute swans, and rare breeding species including bittern and corncrake. The park was established in 1957 — one of the oldest nature reserves in the Soviet Baltic states — and has been a Ramsar Wetland of International Importance since 1994. The Hara Bay anchorage on the eastern edge of the park gives access to the coastal wetlands by dinghy. A strictly shallow-water destination — keelboats with draft over 1.2m cannot enter safely.
