Anchorages in Gulf of Riga North
Pärnu bar entrance and Kihnu Island — two things to know before you go
The Pärnu River bar entrance depth is variable — typically 1.5–3m but can shoal in strong offshore winds. Always call Pärnu Port Authority on VHF Ch 16 for the current bar depth before attempting entry. Vessels with draft over 1.5m should call in advance. Kihnu Island is a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage site protecting a living matriarchal island culture — the women of Kihnu still wear traditional striped skirts as everyday clothing. Visit respectfully: photography of residents requires permission, and the island is a community, not a museum. Ruhnu Island (35nm offshore) requires serious passage planning across open Gulf of Riga water.
