About This Anchorage
Kolovesi National Park is the wilder, more remote counterpart to Linnansaari — less visited, with fewer facilities, but exceptional natural beauty and a stronger sense of wilderness. The park occupies a maze of channels, narrow sounds, and forested islands with dramatic granite outcrops. Rock paintings (up to 5,000 years old) have been found on the granite cliffs — evidence of prehistoric settlement at Saimaa's shores. The Saimaa ringed seal also inhabits Kolovesi waters. The deep channels between the park's islands give outstanding anchoring in deep freshwater mud and clay. Canoe and kayak expeditions are the most common way to explore Kolovesi — sailing here is possible but requires careful navigation in the narrower channels.

Skipper's Tips
- →The prehistoric rock paintings (kalliomaalaukset) are accessible by dinghy — the main site is visible from the water on the cliff faces; approach slowly and quietly
- →Kolovesi is the best place in Finland for complete wilderness sailing solitude — very few yachts and no tourist infrastructure
- →Seal sightings are common — the morning hours are best; approach engine off in the dinghy
- →Bring a kayak or inflatable paddleboard — the narrow channels that yachts cannot enter are the most beautiful parts of Kolovesi
- →The forest mushroom season (late Aug–Sep) transforms the park islands — chanterelles and porcini grow in abundance; permission to pick under jokaisenoikeus
