Greece — Dodecanese

Best Anchorages in the Dodecanese

The Dodecanese form a 300km arc of islands stretching from Patmos in the north to Rhodes in the south, hugging the Turkish coast. Strong meltemi, deep history, and world-class sailing define this region. These 10 anchorages have been verified for depth, bottom type, meltemi protection, and anchor alarm radius.

About the Dodecanese

The Meltemi Factor

The meltemi blows from the NW across the Dodecanese from June to September, typically building to F4–5 by midday and peaking at F6–7 in the Kos–Rhodes corridor. East-facing coasts of each island offer the best natural shelter. Sail between 06:00–10:00 for calm passages; plan overnight stops before noon.

East Coast vs West Coast

The eastern faces of each island (towards Turkey) are sheltered from the meltemi. Western coasts are fully exposed. This pattern is consistent across the entire chain — Vathy (Kalymnos), Lakki (Leros), Marathounda (Symi), and Grikos (Patmos) all benefit from this east-coast protection.

Posidonia Seagrass

Protected Posidonia oceanica meadows are widespread in the Dodecanese. Anchoring on Posidonia is prohibited under EU law and enforced with fines. Always seek sandy patches in the centre of bays; snorkel to verify if the bottom type is unclear.

DEKPA & TEPAI

All yachts over 7m require a DEKPA transit log (~€30) obtainable at first port of entry: Patmos (Skala), Leros (Lakki), Kos Town, or Rhodes (Mandraki). TEPAI cruising tax (~€8/m per month) must be paid online at e-tepai.gr before arrival. Keep documents on board — Hellenic Coast Guard checks are common in summer.

Meltemi Alert — Dodecanese

The meltemi is the defining weather feature of Dodecanese sailing. It can build from flat calm to 30 knots within 2–3 hours on summer afternoons. Always run a GPS anchor alarm overnight — an anchorage that feels calm at anchor set can see significant wind-driven swell by dawn. The recommended alarm radii in these guides account for expected wind swing and scope deployment.
