Panormitis Anchorage Guide

Also known as: Πανορμίτης, Panormiti, Monastery Bay

Panormitis is the spiritual heart of Symi — a virtually landlocked bay enclosing the magnificent 18th-century Monastery of the Archangel Michael, patron saint of sailors. The anchorage offers outstanding Meltemi shelter in a setting of exceptional beauty. The muddy sand bottom gives reliable holding in the N sector. Peak-season ferry and day-tripper traffic makes this one of the busiest bays in the Southern Dodecanese; arrive before 10:00 or after 17:00. Religious rules apply: no nudity, no amplified music.

Recommended Anchor Alarm Radius

60m in the protected N anchorage. Near-total enclosure from the surrounding hills means the anchorage is remarkably stable; the alarm radius can be tighter than open-bay anchorages. Allow sufficient clearance from the ferry maneuvering zone at the L-pier.

The Anchorage

Anchor in the N part of the bay, well clear of the L-pier ferry approach arcs. Muddy sand provides solid holding once set. Test for weed fouling on anchor retrieval. Religious rules apply: nudity and amplified music are prohibited in respect for the monastery. Ferries and day-trip boats use the inner face of the L-pier (3.6–4.7m depth only); stem of L is under 1.5m — do not berth.

Setting Your Anchor

The bottom at Panormitis is primarily mud and sand with reliable holding when properly set. Use the following approach:

  1. Approach slowly and check your depth sounder on the way in. At 58m, deploy at minimum 7:1 scope (56m chain at 8m depth).
  2. Drop into the wind or current and pay out chain steadily as the boat drifts back — do not allow chain to pile on the anchor.
  3. Set firmly in reverse. Apply moderate throttle astern for 30–60 seconds. The chain should tighten without the boat moving backwards.
  4. Take a GPS bearing. Note your position once set and compare to the scope calculator to confirm you have adequate chain for the depth.

Recommended anchor types for this bottom: Rocna, Delta, Mantus. See our guide to anchor types by bottom for detailed comparisons.

Overnight Anchoring & Anchor Alarm

Overnight stays at Panormitis are excellent — 360-degree protection means minimal boat movement.

Set your GPS anchor alarm to 60m radius before going below for the night.60m in the protected N anchorage. Near-total enclosure from the surrounding hills means the anchorage is remarkably stable; the alarm radius can be tighter than open-bay anchorages. Allow sufficient clearance from the ferry maneuvering zone at the L-pier.

May–October. The shelter is excellent year-round. July–August requires early arrival due to extreme congestion. The monastery is open to visitors throughout the season.

Navigation Hazards

  • Very heavy ferry, hydrofoil, and day-trip boat traffic — up to 5 vessels at the L-pier simultaneously; anchor well clear of maneuvering arcs
  • L-pier stem is under 1.5m — grounding risk if approaching the pier without verifying depth
  • Weed patches throughout the bay — test anchor set and check for fouling
  • NW gusts enter the bay in strong Meltemi — generally manageable but check holding

Rules & Regulations

  • Permit: Not required beyond standard Greek DEKPA transit log
  • Anchoring fee: Free
  • Restrictions: DEKPA and TEPAI required. Religious site: nudity and amplified music prohibited. Do not berth at the L-pier stem (under 1.5m); the inner face (3.6–4.7m) is for ferries only. Anchor in the N sector, clear of ferry maneuvering arcs. Posidonia on bay edges — seek sandy patches.

Skipper's Tips

  1. Arrive before 10:00 or after 17:00 when day-trip fleets are absent — the monastery at dawn or dusk is spectacular
  2. Anchor in the N of the bay, away from the L-pier approach, in 5–8m over muddy sand
  3. The monastery is free to enter; the bakery sells excellent local bread and pastries
  4. Observe the religious rules strictly — locals and monastery staff appreciate the respect
  5. From here, Marathounda (5nm NE) makes an excellent next stop for a quieter overnight

A note on this guide: The data in this guide has been researched from multiple sailing sources and is provided in good faith. Anchorage conditions — including depth, holding, and local regulations — can change. Before visiting, always check current weather forecasts, NAVTEX and VHF weather bulletins, and consult your up-to-date charts. Use a GPS anchor alarm and never rely solely on a guide for navigational decisions.

Sleep peacefully at Panormitis
