About This Anchorage
Krokų Lanka is an extraordinary oxbow lake in the Nemunas Delta — a crescent-shaped enclosed water body formed when a river meander was cut off by the straightening of a delta channel. The lake sits in the heart of the delta wetlands, surrounded by dense reed beds, willow scrub, and alder gallery forest, completely cut off from the outside world by its enclosing vegetation. Access is through a narrow channel navigable by vessels with limited draft and careful helmsmanship. Once inside, the lake provides complete shelter from all wind directions — it is essentially a still-water anchorage regardless of conditions outside. The deep mud bottom gives exceptional holding, and the enclosed nature of the lake means the boat barely moves even in the strongest winds. The wildlife here is exceptional: great crested grebes nest in the reed margins, marsh harriers quarter the reed beds, and bitterns boom at dusk in a sound that carries across the still water. The lake has probably been visited by fewer than a hundred sailing yachts in its history — it is one of the genuine hidden anchorages of the Baltic sailing world. A night at Krokų Lanka, with the stars reflected in perfectly still black water and the calls of nightjars from the alders, is an experience of wilderness rarely found so close to civilised Europe.
