Best Anchorages on Bar & the South Coast
From the stunning Valdanos olive-grove fjord to the unique Ada Bojana river delta island on the Albanian border — Montenegro's south coast packs extraordinary variety into 50km of coastline. These 9 verified anchorages cover Bar (the main port of entry from the south), Ulcinj, Velika Plaža, and the delta anchorages.
About Bar & the South Coast
Bar — Port of Entry from the South
Bar is Montenegro's largest commercial port and the mandatory port of entry for yachts arriving from Italy (overnight ferry Bari–Bar), Greece, or Albania. The ACI Marina Bar sits within the commercial port complex — full services including fuel, showers, laundry, chandlery, and haul-out. The overnight ferry from Bari docks adjacent to the yacht basin; plan for early morning arrivals and commercial ship traffic. Stari Bar (Old Bar), a ruined hilltop city 4km inland, is one of the most atmospheric sites in the Adriatic.
Valdanos — Best Free Anchorage in South Montenegro
Valdanos Bay, 2nm N of Bar, is one of the most remarkable anchorages on the entire Adriatic: a deep, fjord-like bay completely enclosed by a protected olive grove of 100,000+ trees (a Montenegrin natural monument). The water is clear, the holding is excellent on thick mud, and the shelter from all winds is close to perfect. No facilities, no marina, no road access — just a wild, green, calm bay that feels completely removed from the commercial port 2nm away.
Ulcinj — Oldest Town on the Adriatic
Ulcinj has documented continuous habitation since the 3rd century BC — older than Dubrovnik, older than Kotor. The old town's 16th-century Venetian walls and castle sit dramatically on a clifftop above the sea. The town is predominantly Albanian-speaking and has a distinctly different atmosphere from the rest of Montenegro — Ottoman-influenced architecture, Albanian cuisine, and a relaxed pace. Anchoring off the old town is possible in settled conditions with excellent views of the walls.
Ada Bojana — Unique River Delta Island
Ada Bojana is unique in the entire Adriatic: a triangular river delta island where the Bojana River splits before meeting the sea, creating a calm, shallow lagoon with 3km of sandy beach. The right (N) channel is Montenegro; the left (S) channel is Albania. The island hosts the oldest naturist resort on the Adriatic, world-class kitesurfing, and fish restaurants that catch directly from the river. The critical constraint: the entire delta is very shallow (1.5–3m) — deep-draft boats cannot enter.
Albanian Border Warning — Do Not Cross Without Clearance
The Albanian border runs through the Bojana River delta and along the coast S of Cape Stoj. Do not cross into Albanian waters (the S channel of the Bojana River or the coast S of Cape Stoj) without first clearing Albanian customs at an official port of entry: Durrës, Vlorë, Sarandë, or Himarë. Albanian authorities actively patrol this border and unauthorised crossings result in vessel detention, fines, and possible confiscation. Plan your approach to Albania in advance and clear customs before the border.
Ada Bojana Depth Warning — Maximum 1.5m Draft
The entire Ada Bojana delta area is extremely shallow. The approach channel and lagoon anchorage have a maximum depth of 1.5–3m. Boats drawing more than 1.5m should not attempt to enter. Boats drawing 1.5–2m must proceed at dead-slow speed with a crew member in the bow sounding continuously with a boat hook or lead line. The channel silts and shifts seasonally — do not rely on charted depths alone. When in doubt, anchor off Velika Plaža beach and dinghy in to Ada Bojana.
