Utjeha Anchorage Guide

Also known as: Utjeha Bay, Uvala Utjeha, Utjesha

Utjeha is a small, relaxed bay 6nm southeast of Bar, tucked between the Bar-Ulcinj coastal road and the sea. The village of Utjeha, with a population of approximately 200, sits on the hillside above the bay, giving the anchorage a lived-in, local character that distinguishes it from the tourist-oriented stops further north on the Budva Riviera. The beach is sandy with pebbles, the bottom is sand in 3–8m with moderate quality holding, and the surrounding hills provide shelter from the northerly quadrants. The bay is open to S and SE Jugo in the standard pattern of the coast. A small seasonal restaurant operates above the beach — accessible by dinghy and a short walk — serving local Montenegrin food at local prices. Utjeha is used mainly as a lunch stop or calm overnight position for boats making the passage between Bar and Ulcinj; it is a relaxed alternative between two more significant destinations and sees very few charter boats. The water is clear and the anchorage uncrowded.

Recommended Anchor Alarm Radius

65m in the bay head covers swing in 3–7m. Utjeha is a relaxed lunch stop or calm overnight between Bar and Ulcinj — the 6nm gap from Bar to Utjeha and a further 9nm to Ulcinj makes it a natural breaking point on the southward passage. The sand holding is reliable in settled conditions. The Jugo exposure from S and SE is the standard limitation. The village of Utjeha has a small seasonal restaurant above the beach — worth a dinghy trip if it is operating. In May and June the bay is usually completely empty of visiting boats.

Bay head — sheltered main anchor ground: 65m recommended — The bay head in 3–7m on sand, sheltered from N, NE, and NW by the surrounding hills and the village of Utjeha on the hillside above.

Outer bay — more depth, more exposure: 80m recommended — The outer section of Utjeha Bay in 6–10m on sand and mud.

Anchoring Zones

Utjeha has 2 distinct anchoring zones, each with different depth, holding, and exposure characteristics.

Zone 1: Bay head — sheltered main anchor ground

  • Depth: 37m
  • Bottom: sand
  • Holding: Good holding
  • Protected from: N, NE, NW
  • Exposed to: S, SE, SW
  • Recommended alarm radius: 65m

The bay head in 3–7m on sand, sheltered from N, NE, and NW by the surrounding hills and the village of Utjeha on the hillside above. Sandy bottom with good consistent holding — set the anchor with engine reverse in 4–5m and confirm it is buried before settling in. The bay is narrow enough that the hills provide meaningful shelter from northerly quadrants, making this a better Bora position than the fully open coast. Open to S and SE — standard Jugo exposure. Day anchorage or calm overnight stop. Alarm radius 65m for the compact bay head zone.

Zone 2: Outer bay — more depth, more exposure

  • Depth: 610m
  • Bottom: sand, mud
  • Holding: Fair holding
  • Protected from: N, NW
  • Exposed to: S, SE, SW, E
  • Recommended alarm radius: 80m

The outer section of Utjeha Bay in 6–10m on sand and mud. Fair holding — the bottom becomes patchier further from the bay head. More swing room than the inner zone but more exposure to SE and E swell. Used by larger yachts that cannot get sufficient depth in the bay head. Day anchorage primarily; not recommended for overnight due to increased SE exposure.

Setting Your Anchor

The bottom at Utjeha is primarily sand with reliable holding when properly set.

  1. Check the Albanian border position before anchoring in the S part of this coast — the boundary runs through the Bojana River delta. Confirm your GPS position is in Montenegrin waters.
  2. Approach slowly and check your depth sounder. At 38m, deploy minimum 7:1 scope (56m chain at 8m depth).
  3. Drop into the wind and pay out chain steadily as the boat drifts back.
  4. Set firmly in reverse — 30–60 seconds at moderate throttle. Check the evening Jugo forecast before going below. Use the scope calculator to confirm adequate chain.

Recommended anchor types: Rocna, Mantus, Spade, Delta.

Overnight Anchoring & Anchor Alarm

Overnight stays at Utjeha are feasible in settled conditions but require vigilance — the anchorage is exposed to S and SE and SW winds.

Set your GPS anchor alarm to 65m radius before going below.

Usable May–October. Best in May, June, and September when the bay is entirely empty of tourists and the conditions are most settled. July–August: the seasonal restaurant operates and occasional local visitors arrive by road; the anchorage itself remains very quiet. Not suitable for overnight use when Jugo is forecast.

Navigation Hazards

  • SE and S Jugo exposure: open to the full Adriatic SE fetch; F4+ Jugo makes the bay untenable; Bar (6nm N) is the nearest marina refuge
  • Limited depth: the bay head shoals rapidly — approach at reduced speed with echosounder; do not exceed 3 knots on approach and anchor in confirmed 3m+ of water
  • Coastal road noise: the Bar-Ulcinj road runs above the bay — traffic noise during the day, reduced at night but audible in the anchorage
  • No services: Utjeha is fully unsupported outside the seasonal restaurant — self-contained provisioning from Bar required
  • Rocky approach from S: the approach from Ulcinj passes several coastal headlands with shoal water extensions — stay 0.5nm offshore on the passage between Utjeha and Ulcinj and confirm depth on charts

Rules & Regulations

  • Montenegro cruising permit (vignette): Mandatory for all foreign yachts. From ~€89/month. Purchase at first port of entry — Bar is the primary port of entry for arrivals from the south.
  • Anchoring fee: Free to anchor.
  • Maximum stay: 3 days
  • Restrictions: Keep clear of the beach swimming zone (50m from beach line). Small local boat activity from the village — observe any local moorings and keep clear. No harbour master in the bay; customs enforcement covers this area from Bar.
  • Tourist tax: ~€1–2 per person per night, paid within 24 hours of arrival.

  • Fresh water: Not available on site
  • Fuel: Not available — nearest: Bar Harbour (6nm N) (6nm)
  • Restaurant: Seasonal restaurant above the beach (July–August, accessible by dinghy; cash in Euro). No reliable facilities outside July–August. Bar (6nm N) for full services.
  • Provisions: None on site — Bar Harbour (6nm N) (6nm)

Skipper's Tips

  1. Utjeha is a perfect lunch stop on the Bar-to-Ulcinj passage in either direction — the bay head in 4m on sand is easy to enter and exit, and the beach is excellent for swimming
  2. The seasonal restaurant above the beach (accessible via dinghy and a 5-minute walk up the hillside path) serves local grilled fish and Montenegrin specialities at prices significantly below tourist-area restaurants
  3. In May and June the bay is completely empty — a private and beautiful sandy anchorage on one of the least visited stretches of the Montenegrin coast
  4. Anchor in the bay head in 4–5m for the best balance of shelter and depth; confirm the sand bottom with a snorkel before going below if the weather looks variable
  5. The passage between Utjeha and Ulcinj (9nm) takes approximately 1.5–2 hours under engine in calm conditions — start before noon to arrive in Ulcinj before the afternoon Lebić wind builds from the SW

A note on this guide: Data has been researched from multiple sailing sources and is provided in good faith. Conditions — depth, holding, regulations — can change. Always check forecasts and current official charts before visiting. Use a GPS anchor alarm and never rely solely on a guide for navigational decisions.
