Rose / Roso Anchorage Guide
Also known as: Roso, Rose Bay, Uvala Rose, Ros
Rose (also shown as Roso on older charts) is a small traditional village on the NE shore of Herceg Novi Bay — quiet, off the tourist circuit, and consistently underrated by the charter fleet that heads straight for Herceg Novi town. The anchorage in 3–8m on sandy-mud off the village waterfront is well sheltered from the NE by the hill line above, making it distinctly calmer than Herceg Novi in moderate Bora. The village has a handful of old stone houses, a small beach, and a timeless atmosphere that has barely changed in decades. There are no tourist facilities to speak of, which is exactly the point. The Herceg Novi fortress and town waterfront are within easy dinghy ride or a gentle afternoon walk along the coastal path. Rose makes an excellent first overnight anchorage in Montenegro if arriving late and not wanting the bustle of Herceg Novi — it is calm, beautiful, and free.

Recommended Anchor Alarm Radius
70m appropriate for the main village anchorage in 3–7m. The bay is compact — in peak season reduce to 55m when other boats are present. The hill shelter significantly reduces Bora severity here compared to Herceg Novi town — this is the better overnight choice in moderate Bora conditions, though not in a full Bora event (move to Bigova or Morinj for that).
Main bay — sandy bottom off village: 70m recommended — The main anchorage in 3–7m on sandy-mud off the small village.
N quadrant — Bora-sheltered pocket: 80m recommended — The N section of the bay benefits from additional hill shelter from the NE Bora direction compared to Herceg Novi town.
Approach anchorage — outer bay: 100m recommended — Outer approach anchorage in 8–14m for larger vessels.
Anchoring Zones
Rose / Roso has 3 distinct anchoring zones, each with different depth, holding, and exposure characteristics. Choose the zone that matches your boat size and the expected overnight conditions.
Zone 1: Main bay — sandy bottom off village
- Depth: 3–8m
- Bottom: sand, mud
- Holding: Good holding
- Protected from: N, NE, E, SE, S
- Exposed to: W, SW, NW
- Recommended alarm radius: 70m
The main anchorage in 3–7m on sandy-mud off the small village. Protection from the NE and E is provided by the hills that shelter Rose from the dominant Bora direction. Holding is good. The bay is shallow — keep echosounder running on approach and anchor no closer than 80m from the beach. A few local fishing boats are moored permanently near the village; give them clear swinging room.
Zone 2: N quadrant — Bora-sheltered pocket
- Depth: 4–9m
- Bottom: sand, mud
- Holding: Good holding
- Protected from: N, NE, E, SE, S
- Exposed to: W, SW
- Recommended alarm radius: 80m
The N section of the bay benefits from additional hill shelter from the NE Bora direction compared to Herceg Novi town. In a moderate Bora event, Rose is distinctly calmer than the open Herceg Novi roadstead — the hill line directly to the NE deflects the katabatic flow. Mud and sand in 4–8m, good holding. Best overnight position when Maestral is forecast to drop overnight and conditions are settled.
Zone 3: Approach anchorage — outer bay
- Depth: 8–15m
- Bottom: sand
- Holding: Fair holding
- Protected from: N, NE, E, S
- Exposed to: W, SW, NW
- Recommended alarm radius: 100m
Outer approach anchorage in 8–14m for larger vessels. Sand bottom, fair holding — set with care and check anchor is well set before going below. More exposed to Maestral from the W. Only used when inner bay is crowded or for short lunch stops on passage between Zelenika and Herceg Novi.
Setting Your Anchor
The bottom at Rose / Roso is primarily sand and mud with reliable holding when properly set.
- Approach slowly and check your depth sounder. At 3–8m, deploy minimum 7:1 scope (56m chain at 8m depth).
- Drop into the wind and pay out chain steadily as the boat drifts back.
- Set firmly in reverse — 30–60 seconds at moderate throttle. The chain should tighten without the boat moving backwards.
- Set the anchor alarm immediately after setting — in the Bay of Kotor, Bora can arrive with as little as 30 minutes' warning. Use the scope calculator to confirm adequate chain length.
Recommended anchor types: Rocna, Mantus, Spade, Delta. See our guide to anchor types by bottom.
Overnight Anchoring & Anchor Alarm
Overnight stays at Rose / Roso are feasible but require vigilance — the anchorage is exposed to W and SW and NW winds.
Set your GPS anchor alarm to 70m radius before going below.
Excellent May–October. Very quiet in May–June and September when charter fleets mostly bypass it. July–August sees some anchor traffic but nothing like Herceg Novi. A good shoulder-season anchorage when the inner bay is calmer. Not recommended for October–April overnights in Bora-prone weather.
Navigation Hazards
- W and SW exposed — Maestral afternoon breeze creates a lop from the W; benign in summer but monitor if strengthening
- Shoaling toward shore: depths drop rapidly inside 80m of the beach — approach slowly and anchor in confirmed 3m+ of water
- Bora exposure moderate (better than Herceg Novi, worse than Morinj or Bigova) — in severe Bora forecasts, move to Bigova outside the bay or Morinj inside the bay
- Local fishing boats moored in the NW corner — keep clear; their mooring lines are long and not always obvious
- No lights in the village or on the waterfront — approach only in daylight if unfamiliar
Rules & Regulations
- Montenegro cruising permit (vignette): Mandatory for all foreign yachts — purchase at first port of entry. From ~€89/month.
- Anchoring fee: Free to anchor.
- Maximum stay: 5 days
- Restrictions: Keep clear of permanent local fishing boat moorings in the NW corner. No anchoring within 30m of the beach. Depths shoal rapidly toward shore — use echosounder carefully.
- Risan Bay: Anchoring permanently prohibited in the entire Bay of Risan (underwater archaeological site).

Skipper's Tips
- Rose is the ideal antidote to peak-season Herceg Novi — arrive in the afternoon after visiting the town, tuck in here for a peaceful night, and return by dinghy for dinner ashore
- The coastal path to Herceg Novi old town takes about 20–25 minutes on foot along a beautiful waterfront promenade — no car needed
- Anchor in the northern part of the bay where the hill shelter from Bora is most effective; the southern part of the bay is more open to NE gusts
- Deeper water (8m+) in the outer bay works well for passage stops when the inner bay is busy — but confirm holding before going below as sand without mud can be patchy
- A quiet morning swim from the beach before the Maestral fills in is one of the simple pleasures of the Bay of Kotor — the water is calm, clear, and usually warmer than the open coast
A note on this guide: Data has been researched from multiple sailing sources and is provided in good faith. Conditions — depth, holding, regulations — can change. Always check forecasts, NAVTEX, and current official charts before visiting. Use a GPS anchor alarm and never rely solely on a guide for navigational decisions.
Sleep peacefully at Rose / Roso
Safety Anchor Alarm monitors your GPS position continuously and sounds a loud alarm the moment your boat drifts — essential in the Bay of Kotor where Bora can arrive within 30 minutes of the first cap clouds forming on the peaks.
