Donja Lastva Anchorage Guide

Also known as: Uvala Donja Lastva, Lastva, Gornja Lastva

Donja Lastva is a local Montenegrin fishing village on the E shore of Tivat Bay, near the Lepetane ferry crossing — one of those anchorages visited almost exclusively by independent sailors who have taken the time to explore beyond the well-known stops. The anchorage in 4–6m of excellent mud off the village waterfront is completely sheltered by the bay's mountain walls, with small shops and a bakery accessible on foot from the dinghy landing. The fishing harbour is still working — small blue-painted boats, nets drying on the quay, the smell of the catch in the morning. The Lepetane–Kamenari car ferry crosses 0.5nm N with some regularity — fast-moving and audible; maintain 200m clear. From Donja Lastva, both Tivat town (1.8nm S by dinghy) and the remarkable Rose village anchorage (2nm SW) are within easy reach, making this a useful hub position for exploring the NE Tivat Bay area.

Recommended Anchor Alarm Radius

60m appropriate for 4–5m of excellent mud with all-round shelter. The alarm radius here functions as a pure drag indicator — the mountain walls of Tivat Bay eliminate meaningful weather exposure at this position. The main external hazard is the Lepetane ferry (0.5nm N) rather than wind or swell. Set the anchor firmly and maintain a 60m radius to account for any tide or light wind-induced swing.

Off village waterfront — main anchorage: 60m recommended — The main anchorage in 4–5m on mud off the Donja Lastva village waterfront.

Deeper water off harbour mouth: 70m recommended — Deeper water off the harbour mouth in 5–8m on mud — more swing room for larger vessels.

S of village — quietest position: 55m recommended — S of the village centre in 3–5m on mud and sand — away from the fishing harbour activity and slightly more removed from the ferry track noise.

Anchoring Zones

Donja Lastva has 3 distinct anchoring zones, each with different depth, holding, and exposure characteristics.

Zone 1: Off village waterfront — main anchorage

  • Depth: 46m
  • Bottom: mud
  • Holding: Excellent holding
  • Protected from: N, NE, E, SE, S, W, NW
  • Recommended alarm radius: 60m

The main anchorage in 4–5m on mud off the Donja Lastva village waterfront. Excellent holding throughout. All-round shelter from the surrounding Tivat Bay mountain walls — the same exceptional protection that covers the entire inner bay. This is the NE sector of Tivat Bay, closer to the Lepetane ferry crossing than the main town anchorage. Local fishing harbour with small boats. A few shops and a bakery in the village visible from the anchorage. Keep clear of the local fishing boat mooring area in the N corner of the village.

Zone 2: Deeper water off harbour mouth

  • Depth: 59m
  • Bottom: mud
  • Holding: Excellent holding
  • Protected from: N, NE, E, SE, S, W, NW
  • Recommended alarm radius: 70m

Deeper water off the harbour mouth in 5–8m on mud — more swing room for larger vessels. Excellent holding. Still within the bay's all-round shelter envelope. Note the Lepetane car ferry crossing approximately 0.5nm N — the ferry crosses from the N shore of Tivat Bay to Kamenari at regular intervals throughout the day; it is fast and has limited stopping distance. Keep well clear of the ferry track. The deep mud here sets anchors extremely reliably.

Zone 3: S of village — quietest position

  • Depth: 36m
  • Bottom: mud, sand
  • Holding: Good holding
  • Protected from: N, NE, E, SE, S, W, NW
  • Recommended alarm radius: 55m

S of the village centre in 3–5m on mud and sand — away from the fishing harbour activity and slightly more removed from the ferry track noise. Good holding. More peaceful for overnight. A handful of local boats on moorings occupy the S shore — anchor clear of their swinging circles. Small beach in the S corner offers a swim stop.

Setting Your Anchor

The bottom at Donja Lastva is primarily mud with reliable holding when properly set.

  1. Check for shellfish farm buoys before approaching. Orange buoys mark the farm perimeter — stay well clear and anchor only in the SE section of the bay.
  2. Approach slowly and check your depth sounder. At 46m, deploy minimum 7:1 scope (42m chain at 6m depth).
  3. Set firmly in reverse — 30–60 seconds at moderate throttle. Mud and sand bottom sets well on the first attempt.
  4. Note ferry and superyacht wash. The Lepetane ferry and Porto Montenegro traffic create periodic wash — ensure you have adequate scope and use the scope calculator to confirm chain length.

Recommended anchor types: Rocna, Mantus, Spade, Delta, CQR.

Overnight Anchoring & Anchor Alarm

Overnight stays at Donja Lastva are excellent — all-round protection means minimal boat movement.

Set your GPS anchor alarm to 60m radius before going below.

Excellent May–October. Local character at its most authentic in May–June before the tourist season reaches Tivat town. The all-round shelter makes this a year-round option for boats wintering in the Tivat area. The ferry noise (day only) is the main limitation — completely quiet after ferry service ends in the evening.

Navigation Hazards

  • LEPETANE FERRY (CRITICAL): Fast-moving car ferry crosses 0.5nm N of the anchorage between Lepetane (N shore) and Kamenari continuously throughout the day; keep 200m clear of the ferry track and do not anchor in its path.
  • VERIGE STRAIT (1.5nm NW): cruise ships transit regularly — do not sail into or near the strait without monitoring VHF Ch 16.
  • Local fishing harbour activity: early morning boat movements create wash in the N anchorage area — the S anchorage position is quieter for overnight.
  • Local mooring buoys throughout — approach slowly and keep clear of mooring lines.
  • SHELLFISH FARMS (W bay): the farms in the W Tivat Bay begin several nautical miles W — not an issue from Donja Lastva, but do not navigate W without awareness of the shellfish farm zone.

Rules & Regulations

  • Montenegro cruising permit (vignette): Mandatory for all foreign yachts. Porto Montenegro is a valid port of entry. From ~€89/month.
  • Anchoring fee: Free to anchor.
  • Maximum stay: 5 days
  • Restrictions: LEPETANE FERRY (CRITICAL): The Lepetane–Kamenari car ferry crosses Tivat Bay 0.5nm N of the anchorage. Do not anchor in the ferry track — the ferry is fast and has limited stopping distance. Maintain 200m clear of the ferry route at all times. Keep clear of the fishing harbour approach. Do not obstruct local fishing boat mooring areas.
  • Shellfish farms: Do not anchor in W or NW Tivat Bay — active mussel/oyster farms with submerged lines.

Skipper's Tips

  1. The bakery in Donja Lastva opens early — a 06:30 dinghy trip ashore for fresh bread before the day heats up is a genuine reward for anchoring here rather than at the marina.
  2. The S anchorage position (away from the fishing harbour) provides a quieter night than the village front — local boats start engines before dawn and the activity is noisy.
  3. Donja Lastva is an excellent base for a day trip to Rose village (2nm SW) — anchor here overnight and dinghy or sail to Rose for dinner, returning with full stars visible across the bay.
  4. The Lepetane ferry horn is audible from the anchorage — use it as an audio warning to check your proximity; if you can hear it clearly, confirm you are 200m+ clear.
  5. From Donja Lastva, the full scale of the Tivat Bay mountain enclosure is apparent — looking S toward Porto Montenegro and W toward the Lustica Peninsula with Tivat Bay's extraordinary mountain walls on every side.

A note on this guide: Data has been researched from multiple sailing sources and is provided in good faith. Conditions — depth, holding, regulations — can change. Always check forecasts and current official charts before visiting. Use a GPS anchor alarm and never rely solely on a guide for navigational decisions.
