About This Anchorage

Nusfjord is Norway's best-preserved fishing village and a UNESCO-listed cultural heritage site — a tiny, extraordinary community of 19th-century rorbu (fishermen's cabins), fish processing buildings, and a general store, all in original condition, huddled around a perfectly circular natural harbour carved into the Flakstadøy cliffs. The harbour walls, the cod-liver oil factory, the traditional store and the rorbu buildings form one of the most atmospheric maritime heritage sites in Scandinavia. The village has been preserved in its entirety and converted into an upscale rorbu accommodation complex. Arriving by boat is the authentic way to experience Nusfjord.

Anchoring Rules

Anchoring fee
Free (anchoring); Heritage site — no unauthorised access to private rorbu buildings
Permit required
No

Restrictions: Allemannsretten applies for anchoring. Nusfjord heritage buildings are privately managed (rorbu rental operation) — no camping or unauthorised entry to buildings. The inner harbour quay is for operational fishing boats and rorbu guests. Respect the cultural heritage site character.

Hazards

  • !W/NW exposure to Vestfjorden: the south coast of Lofoten faces Vestfjord and any westerly swell penetrates the harbour approach — depart if W weather forecast
  • !Approach to the circular harbour is through a narrow rock-flanked entrance — use echo sounder and proceed very slowly; rocks on both sides of the entrance
  • !Katabatic night winds from the valley above: 20–35 knots possible overnight; shore lines to harbour walls mandatory
  • !Tourist day boats visit regularly in summer: RIBs and small passenger vessels from Leknes and Svolvær — keep clear of the inner harbour approach

Skipper's Tips

  • Book a rorbu dinner reservation at Nusfjord in advance — the fish soup and fresh cod dinner in the original 19th-century building is exceptional
  • Approach timing: enter the Nusfjord harbour at half-tide rising — the entrance shallowest section has 2.5m minimum at LW; the circular harbour is 3–8m inside
  • Photography: Nusfjord at golden midnight sun light with reflections in the circular harbour is one of Norway's iconic images — the orange rorbuer on the cliff reflection is extraordinary
  • Hiking above: the mountain path from Nusfjord to Neslandsvatnet lake (1.5 hours) gives spectacular views of both the south coast of Lofoten and the Vestfjorden
