90m in 5–22m on deep glaciomarine mud — the finest anchor-holding bottom in this entire guide. Thick, cohesive glaciomarine sediment deposited over thousands of years of glacial activity holds anchors with exceptional tenacity. Completely enclosed anchorage. AIS mandatory. Shore lines recommended for overnight stability.

About This Anchorage

Longyearbyen (population ~2,400) is the world's northernmost city with a permanent population — a former coal mining town at 78°N that has reinvented itself as a polar research and tourism hub. It is the mandatory first and last port of call for all yachts visiting Svalbard — Norwegian regulations require check-in with the Sysselmannen here. The town has remarkable facilities for its location: a supermarket, hospital, university (UNIS), post office, bank, several restaurants and a well-equipped marina. The landscape is breathtaking Arctic tundra, permafrost and mountain — Svalbard reindeer (endemic, shorter-legged than mainland reindeer) wander through the town. REMEMBER: polar bears can enter Longyearbyen; firearms protocol applies at all times outside designated safe zones.

Hazards

  • !POLAR BEARS: Can enter the town and marina area — firearms must be carried outside the town's designated safe perimeter. Check the current bear safety zone boundaries at the Sysselmannen office
  • !Large vessel traffic in Isfjorden: research vessels, icebreakers, supply ships and cruise ships — AIS mandatory; maintain good radar and visual watch at all times
  • !Katabatic winds from Adventdalen: the wide Adventdalen valley above Longyearbyen channels cold air drainage down to the fjord; overnight katabatic events of 20–30 knots possible
  • !Ice conditions: in early July and in cold years ice can still be present in parts of Isfjorden; check Norwegian Ice Service (is.met.no) before arrival

Skipper's Tips

  • Mandatory first step: visit the Sysselmannen office to register your vessel and receive the current polar bear safety and national park regulations — staff are helpful and knowledgeable
  • Global Seed Vault: the Svalbard Global Seed Vault (1km from town) is accessible by public road — the most important building on Earth for food security; a remarkable visit
  • Svalbard Museum: the best introduction to Svalbard's geology, ecology and history — essential before heading into the remote fjords
  • Charter firearms: if you did not bring firearms from the mainland, the Svalbard Hunters Association (Svalbard Jeger og Fangstforening) may be able to arrange temporary charter rifles — enquire on arrival

Best Months & Season

July, August

July–August. The midnight sun at 78°N means continuous daylight from late April to mid-August — navigation is possible 24 hours but the crew must discipline their sleep schedule. Longyearbyen is accessible by air from Oslo and Tromsø year-round but sailing season is July–August only.
