Recommended Anchor Alarm Radius

85m

85m in 5–22m on deep glaciomarine mud. Outstanding holding in the thick sediment layers from multiple glacier systems. Completely enclosed by mountains. Shore lines essential — not for wind reasons but for security against polar bear approach at the waterline. Glacier calving can generate small waves even in flat calm — use shore lines for additional stability.

About This Anchorage

Van Keulenfjorden is a remote, pristine Arctic fjord in south Spitsbergen National Park, one of the most spectacular and least-visited sailing destinations in Svalbard. The fjord penetrates 30km into the heart of the Wedel Jarlsberg Land, ending at a complex of tidewater glaciers (Nathorstbreen, Van Keulenbre) that calve directly into the fjord head. The landscape is the pure Arctic: bare tundra, exposed permafrost, ice-scraped mountains, and the absolute silence of a place with no human habitation. The anchorage at the fjord head is an extraordinary experience — lying at anchor with glacier faces 1–2km distant, watching ice calve in the 24-hour summer light. Walrus (hvalross) haul-out grounds exist along the shores of Van Keulenfjorden.

Anchoring Rules

Anchoring fee
Free
Permit required
No

Restrictions: SVALBARD SOUTH SPITSBERGEN NATIONAL PARK RULES APPLY: No camping, fires, or activities that disturb terrain or wildlife. Cultural heritage protection: pre-1946 artefacts (trapper cabins, harpoon stations) automatically protected — do not touch or enter. POLAR BEAR PROTOCOL: Firearms mandatory. Bear guard required whenever crew goes ashore. Do not disturb walrus hauling grounds — approach minimum 50m by boat. Contact Sysselmannen on VHF Ch. 16 before entering remote areas.

Hazards

  • !POLAR BEARS: Van Keulenfjorden is prime polar bear territory — armed bear watch must be maintained whenever crew is ashore; bears can approach silently and swim to boats
  • !Calving glaciers: tidewater glacier faces 1–2km from the anchorage calve regularly; the resulting waves (calving seiche) can reach 0.5–1m at anchor; stay minimum 500m from glacier faces
  • !Bergy bits and growlers: small ice fragments drift from glacier faces and can be invisible at night or in fog; anchor watch essential, especially after calving events
  • !Total isolation: 58nm from Longyearbyen; medical emergency or vessel failure here is extremely serious — carry a fully equipped medical kit, EPIRB, PLB for every crew member, and spare motor/towing arrangements

Skipper's Tips

  • Trapper cabins: several 19th-early 20th century Norwegian trapper cabins exist along Van Keulenfjorden shores — culturally protected, do not enter; photograph only from outside
  • Walrus approach: approach walrus hauling grounds VERY slowly and quietly by dinghy at minimum 50m — walrus can capsize a small dinghy if startled; remarkable wildlife viewing from safe distance
  • Glacier watching: anchor 500m from the Nathorstbreen face and watch for calving events — the sight of a 30m ice wall collapsing into the fjord is one of the great Arctic experiences
  • Anchor watch protocol: establish a 2-hour rotating anchor watch; check for bear approach from shore and ice movement from glacier; this is not an anchorage to leave entirely unattended

Best Months & Season

July, August

August is the most reliable month — July can still have significant ice in the fjord head area. Early August the glacier faces are typically clear enough for the 500m safe approach distance. September sees rapid weather deterioration and increasing ice.

Set Your Anchor Alarm to 85m

In Svalbard, ice movement and katabatic winds from glaciers can drag anchors overnight. Safety Anchor Alarm monitors your GPS position continuously in Arctic conditions.
