About This Anchorage

Culatra is consistently rated one of the finest anchorages on the Portuguese south coast — a sheltered lagoon inside the Ria Formosa Natural Park barrier island system, 6nm from Faro. The barrier islands provide near-perfect protection from Atlantic swell and most wind directions. The anchorage accommodates hundreds of boats in season. The Ria Formosa is a NATURA 2000 protected area, home to flamingos, spoonbills, and the rare Chameleon. Culatra village retains a genuine fishing community atmosphere with excellent seafood restaurants. The sunsets from this anchorage are legendary on the Algarve. Entry requires careful navigation through the Barra de Culatra (buoyed channel) — always enter at half-flood.

Anchoring Rules

Anchoring fee
Free
Permit required
No

Restrictions: NATURA 2000 PROTECTED AREA: Ria Formosa Natural Park (Parque Natural da Ria Formosa) rules apply. No anchoring on seagrass (posidonia/zostera) beds — sandy patches only. Do not disturb birdlife (flamingo roosting areas especially). Speed limit in the lagoon is 8 knots. No discharge of waste or grey water within the park. Motor through the lagoon at slow speed to avoid wake damage to the salt marshes.

Hazards

  • !Tidal streams in the lagoon channels — 2–3 knots at springs; anchor far from the channel fairway to avoid dragging into it
  • !NATURA 2000 rules: anchoring on seagrass beds prohibited — verify sandy patch with echo sounder or snorkelling
  • !Barra de Culatra entrance requires careful pilotage — channel shifts with sand movement; use latest chart and pilot guide for waypoints
  • !Very busy in July–August with hundreds of boats; arriving after 15:00 in peak season means limited swinging room

Skipper's Tips

  • Enter the Barra de Culatra at half-flood following the buoyed channel; detailed waypoints in the RCCPF Atlantic Spain & Portugal pilot are essential
  • Anchor well back from the main channel — tidal stream is strong and boats swing to the tide, not wind, inside the lagoon
  • Arrive early in peak season (before 14:00) to secure adequate swinging room; the lagoon fills quickly on summer weekends
  • The sunsets from the anchorage looking W over the barrier island are consistently cited by cruising sailors as the best on the Algarve

Best Months & Season

April, May, June, July, August, September, October

April–October is excellent — the Ria Formosa provides all-weather shelter within the lagoon. July–August is peak with the most boats but still manageable with early arrival. October–March the lagoon is peaceful and beautiful but access to facilities is limited. Winter anchoring inside the Ria is perfectly safe in storm conditions, unlike exposed Algarve coast.
