About This Anchorage

Galapinhos is one of the least accessible and most pristine beaches in the Arrábida Natural Park — accessible only by boat or a long steep hike from the clifftop road. The cove is tucked between dramatic limestone cliffs that plunge straight into the turquoise sea, with a small arc of white sand at the head. The Navily database confirms excellent sand holding at 3–5m. Unlike Portinho da Arrábida, this cove is typically in the Complementary Protection Zone allowing anchoring, but the zone boundaries should always be confirmed with the park authority (ICNF) or Setúbal Capitania before visiting. The isolation means this is far more peaceful than Portinho in peak season.

Restrictions: NATURA 2000: Posidonia meadows possible on cove edges — anchor on sandy centre. No beach bonfires or littering. Do not disturb nesting seabirds on the cliffs above. Hazards

  • !Park zone boundary uncertainty — always verify current zone status before anchoring; unauthorized anchoring fined
  • !Open S/SE/SW — Atlantic swell penetrates; departure trigger at first S component in forecast
  • !No facilities whatsoever — self-sufficient day/overnight stay only; carry all provisions and water
  • !Occasional wash from the Serra da Arrábida road above — rock fall from cliffs possible in winter/spring storms

Skipper's Tips

  • This is the Arrábida anchorage for those wanting solitude over facilities — come self-sufficient with food, water and good weather forecast
  • The beach is among Portugal's clearest water for snorkelling — bring mask/fins and explore the cliff bases
  • Best combined with Galapos (1nm E) — spend the morning at Galapinhos, move to Galapos for lunch where slightly more shelter exists
  • Confirm zone status with Setúbal Capitania (VHF Ch. 16) before anchoring — this is a simple radio call that avoids any fine

Best Months & Season

May, June, September, October

May–June and September are ideal. In July–August, the park road access restrictions mean fewer hikers reaching the beach — somewhat counterintuitively it may be less crowded by land visitors than shoulder season. Avoid in any S forecast.
