About This Anchorage

Galapos is a slightly larger and more accessible beach than Galapinhos immediately to the west, with a longer arc of white sand. The anchorage is in front of the beach in 3–6m on clean sand, sheltered from the NW Nortada by the Serra da Arrábida cliffs. It serves as a good base for exploring both Galapos and Galapinhos beaches by dinghy. The water clarity is exceptional — visibility often exceeds 20m. A park warden post is sometimes positioned on the beach in summer, overseeing compliance with park rules. Like all Arrábida anchorages: confirm zone status with Setúbal Capitania before anchoring.

Hazards

  • !Posidonia meadows on cove edges — anchor in sandy central area and snorkel to verify
  • !Open S/SE exposure — move at first sign of S swell developing
  • !Park warden may visit by boat to check compliance with zone rules and anchoring regulations

Skipper's Tips

  • Use Galapos as the overnight base when combining with a Portinho da Arrábida day trip — slightly less regulated while maintaining stunning scenery
  • The underwater visibility here is exceptional — bring diving/snorkelling gear; the posidonia meadows around the edges support diverse marine life
  • Combined dinghy exploration of Galapos → Galapinhos → Portinho is a beautiful 4-hour scenic route along the cliff faces

Best Months & Season

May, June, September, October

May–October is viable. Peak season (Jul–Aug) sees more visitors by boat and the park warden is more active. Shoulder months are most peaceful. All Arrábida anchorages are potentially exposed in autumn Atlantic storms.

no anchoring. Partial Protection Zone: anchoring on sand/rock only (no Posidonia).
