About This Anchorage

Ponta Delgada is the capital of the Azores and the primary gateway for visiting sailors — the largest city (80,000 inhabitants), major port, and the full-service hub for the archipelago. São Miguel is the 'Green Island' — lush, volcanic, with hot springs, crater lakes, and a subtropical landscape. The recently expanded Portas do Mar marina (640 berths) is the primary facility. Ponta Delgada is one of three official ports of entry for non-EU vessels entering the Azores (with Horta and Praia da Vitória). The city offers excellent provisioning, repairs, and air connections (SATA Air to mainland Portugal and international routes). The island is spectacular for land touring: Furnas hot springs, Sete Cidades twin crater lakes, and Lagoa do Fogo.

Anchoring Rules

Anchoring fee
Free (with prior authorisation); marina berthing fee at standard Azores rates
Permit required
No

Restrictions: MANDATORY CLEARANCE PORT: Non-EU vessels must clear immigration and customs here. Contact Harbour Authority (VHF Ch. 16 + 14) for anchoring permission. Contact Maritime Police (VHF Ch. 16 + 11) with exact anchor position when anchoring. All vessels must clear in/out at each island visited.

Hazards

  • !S and SE exposure in the outer anchorage — Atlantic swell from the S can make anchoring uncomfortable; marina berth strongly preferred
  • !Busy commercial port — ferry and cargo vessel traffic; give ferries a wide berth at all times
  • !If anchoring, mandatory position report to Maritime Police (VHF Ch. 11) required — failure to report may attract attention from port authority

Skipper's Tips

  • Book a marina berth in Portas do Mar before arrival — call VHF Ch. 16 one day ahead or use the marina booking system; the 640 berths are usually sufficient outside peak season
  • Furnas hot springs (25km from Ponta Delgada) are one of the most extraordinary natural attractions in the Azores — hire a car for the day; include lunch at one of the restaurants that cooks cozido inside the volcanic vents
  • SATA Air (Azores Airlines) operates regular flights from Ponta Delgada to Lisbon, London, and Boston — useful for crew changes during extended cruising
  • The fish market (Mercado da Graça, near the marina) has exceptional fresh seafood at very reasonable prices
