About This Anchorage

Santa Maria is the southernmost and oldest Azorean island — the first to be settled by the Portuguese (mid-15th century) and historically the gateway to the Atlantic islands. The island is distinctive for its drier, sunnier climate and yellow limestone landscapes compared to the greener northern islands. There are very few good anchorages around Santa Maria; most are small and viable only in very settled weather. The two primary anchorages (Praia Formosa on the S coast and São Lourenço on the E tip) have been verified by cruising sailors at the GPS positions given. Vila do Porto has a small marina — no anchoring permitted in the port area. This island is off the main trans-Atlantic route and sees fewer sailing visitors than Faial or São Miguel.

  • !Deep anchoring (8–12m) requires adequate chain length — vessels with short chain runs should not attempt these anchorages

Skipper's Tips

  • Visit Praia Formosa only as part of a settled high-pressure window — check forecast for a minimum 36h stable window before anchoring
  • Call Vila do Porto Port Authority (VHF Ch. 16) before anchoring to confirm current rules and register your position
  • Santa Maria airport has regular SATA flights to São Miguel — useful for crew changes if stopping here
  • The island's landscape is distinctive and beautiful — yellow limestone and red soil unlike the green volcanic islands; worth the detour for those exploring the full archipelago

Best Months & Season

June, July, August, September

June–September is the only realistic window. Santa Maria is best visited as a day stop in settled weather, not as a primary cruising destination — limited facilities and few anchorages make it a challenging overnight.
