55m inside the river in 2–4m on sand/mud. Shallow bar — enter only at half-flood minimum with swell below 0.5m. Good shelter once inside the Rio Cávado. River current on ebb can reach 1–2 knots — set anchor into current.

About This Anchorage

Esposende is a small Atlantic resort town midway between Viana do Castelo and Póvoa de Varzim on the northern Portuguese coast, at the mouth of the Rio Cávado. The small river mouth provides a sheltered anchorage inside the bar, useful as a waypoint stop on a coastal passage or as a quiet overnight away from commercial ports. The Cávado estuary forms part of the Litoral Norte Natural Park — a protected coastal dune and wetland habitat with exceptional birdlife. The bar at the river mouth is shallow (1.5–2.5m) and must be entered at half-flood in calm conditions. The quiet town has basic provisioning, seafood restaurants on the riverside, and an easy-going Atlantic beach resort atmosphere that is authentically Portuguese and largely undiscovered by foreign yachts.

Setting Your Anchor

Scope: Use 7:1 scope minimum in Atlantic conditions — river currents and overnight swell demand extra chain. In river estuaries, set anchor into the current direction.

Swell Assessment: Check swell buoy data (Leixões, Sines, or Figueira da Foz buoys on onda.pt or windguru.cz) before anchoring at any exposed Douro North Coast location. Residual Atlantic groundswell is present even in calm E winds.

Bar Crossing Protocol: For all river and estuary entries (Douro, Rio Lima, Rio Cávado, Rio Minho): contact the relevant port authority on VHF Ch 16 before approach; enter only at half-flood with swell below 1m; never attempt on an ebb tide or with breaking seas on the bar.

Tidal Planning: Spring tidal range 3–4m. Calculate tide height against draft for marina approach at Viana do Castelo (entrance obstruction 2.5m LWS). Factor strong ebb current into anchoring — set hook into the current.

Anchoring Rules

Anchoring fee
Free
Permit required
No

Restrictions: Litoral Norte Natural Park: respect estuary habitat, do not anchor on mudflat vegetation or disturb nesting areas. Bar depth varies seasonally with sand movement — always check before approach via VHF Ch 16. River current can be strong on ebb — factor into anchoring.

Hazards

  • !Shallow bar at river entrance — variable depth 1.5–2.5m; seasonal sand migration can close the channel; always check on VHF Ch 16 before approach
  • !W exposure at the bar — approaching in any W or NW swell is dangerous; enter only in genuinely calm conditions at half-flood
  • !River current on ebb: 1–2 knots can cause anchor drag on lighter tackle — use at least 7:1 scope and dig in well before settling

Skipper's Tips

  • Useful quiet overnight on a Viana–Leixões passage — use only in settled stable conditions; Leixões and Viana are more reliable if any westerly forecast exists
  • The Litoral Norte dune system is botanically outstanding — one of the largest mobile dune systems in Portugal; good walking from the anchorage
  • Time arrival for 2 hours after low water (approaching half-flood) — gives maximum bar depth and the flood stream assists entry

Best Months & Season

May, June, July, August, September

May–September in settled conditions. Transitional stop — best used as a quiet overnight on a Viana–Leixões coastal passage in stable anticyclonic weather. The bar becomes dangerous in any NW swell above 0.5m.
