Anchorages in Northern Portugal — Douro & North Coast
From Porto's famous Douro River mouth north to the Spanish border at Caminha — river bars, Atlantic groundswell, and the Nortada make this one of the most demanding coasts in Iberia. All bar crossings require careful tidal timing in calm conditions.
CRITICAL — Douro Bar & Atlantic Conditions
The Barra do Douro (Douro River bar) is PROHIBITED for yachts when swell exceeds 1m or the bar is breaking. Listen to Leixões Port Authority on VHF Ch 11 or 16 for current bar conditions before any approach. The Nortada (NW trade wind) builds to F4–5 daily by 11:00–13:00 in summer — plan all passages for early morning. Atlantic groundswell of 2–3m is common in summer; 4–6m in storms. Most sailors use Leixões (Porto) as their all-weather base for this coast.
TIDAL RANGE — 3–4m Springs; All River Entries Require Tidal Planning
Spring tidal range is 3–4m throughout the Douro & North Coast. All river mouth and estuary entries require approach at half-flood minimum — river bars are dangerous in swell against an ebb tide. Rivers flow strongly on the ebb: Douro, Rio Lima (Viana do Castelo), Rio Cávado (Esposende), and Rio Minho (Caminha) all require tidal timing. Enter bars at half-flood with swell below 0.5–1m maximum. VHF Leixões Ch 11/16; Viana do Castelo Ch 12/16; Coast Guard Ch 16.
