About This Anchorage
Ancora (known fully as Vila Praia de Ancora) is a small traditional fishing village and beach resort north of Viana do Castelo, set between the rocky headlands of the northern Minho coast. The beach anchorage off the village provides a pleasant stop in fair weather with NE or E winds, with good holding on clean Atlantic sand. The village itself is delightful — a genuine working fishing community with excellent fresh fish restaurants around the small harbour, a beautiful parish church, and a friendly, unhurried atmosphere. The anchorage is purely a fair-weather stop: the W/NW Atlantic exposure makes it untenable in any westerly swell. Use Viana do Castelo as your base and visit Ancora by boat as a day trip in suitable conditions.

Setting Your Anchor
Scope: Use 7:1 scope minimum in Atlantic conditions — river currents and overnight swell demand extra chain. In river estuaries, set anchor into the current direction.
Swell Assessment: Check swell buoy data (Leixões, Sines, or Figueira da Foz buoys on onda.pt or windguru.cz) before anchoring at any exposed Douro North Coast location. Residual Atlantic groundswell is present even in calm E winds.
Bar Crossing Protocol: For all river and estuary entries (Douro, Rio Lima, Rio Cávado, Rio Minho): contact the relevant port authority on VHF Ch 16 before approach; enter only at half-flood with swell below 1m; never attempt on an ebb tide or with breaking seas on the bar.
Tidal Planning: Spring tidal range 3–4m. Calculate tide height against draft for marina approach at Viana do Castelo (entrance obstruction 2.5m LWS). Factor strong ebb current into anchoring — set hook into the current.

- !W/NW Atlantic exposure — swell can build quickly with wind shift; depart immediately if W/NW conditions develop; Viana do Castelo (8nm S) is the fallback
- !Drying fishing harbour — do not attempt entry with a keel yacht at any state of tide; anchor off and use dinghy to land
- !Atlantic swell refraction: even in E winds, residual Atlantic groundswell can make the anchorage uncomfortable overnight

- →Best approached on a northbound passage from Viana — anchor for lunch and explore the village, then continue to Caminha or Vila Praia de Ancora proper
- →The fish restaurants in the village square serve outstanding fresh Atlantic fish at very reasonable prices — excellent caldeirada
- →Do not leave the boat unattended overnight here without a reliable E/NE wind forecast and no swell forecast — the exposure risk is real
