Recommended Anchor Alarm Radius

65m

65m south of the harbour breakwater in 3–6m sand/mud. Better than open beach anchorages nearby but still W/NW exposed. Set 65m alarm. Monitor swell forecast — Viana do Castelo (7nm S) remains the recommended overnight base for this area.

About This Anchorage

Vila Praia de Ancora is a pleasant small fishing and resort village on the northern Portuguese coast between Viana do Castelo and Caminha, with a small drying harbour and a beach anchorage south of the breakwater. It is marginally more sheltered than the open beach at Afife (3nm south) due to the partial breakwater protection from northerly directions. The village has excellent fresh fish restaurants, a traditional fishing harbour with colourful boats, and a relaxed, authentic atmosphere that has not yet been heavily touristified. The anchorage is best used as a lunch stop or short overnight in settled offshore conditions — Viana do Castelo remains the preferred overnight base for any uncertain forecast. The coastal road connects easily to Viana (10km south) and Caminha (8km north), making this a useful shore-side provisioning stop if conditions allow.

Setting Your Anchor

Scope: Use 7:1 scope minimum in Atlantic conditions — river currents and overnight swell demand extra chain. In river estuaries, set anchor into the current direction.

Swell Assessment: Check swell buoy data (Leixões, Sines, or Figueira da Foz buoys on onda.pt or windguru.cz) before anchoring at any exposed Douro North Coast location. Residual Atlantic groundswell is present even in calm E winds.

Bar Crossing Protocol: For all river and estuary entries (Douro, Rio Lima, Rio Cávado, Rio Minho): contact the relevant port authority on VHF Ch 16 before approach; enter only at half-flood with swell below 1m; never attempt on an ebb tide or with breaking seas on the bar.

Tidal Planning: Spring tidal range 3–4m. Calculate tide height against draft for marina approach at Viana do Castelo (entrance obstruction 2.5m LWS). Factor strong ebb current into anchoring — set hook into the current.

Anchoring Rules

Anchoring fee
Free
Permit required
No

Restrictions: Drying fishing harbour — do not attempt entry with keel boat. Keep clear of the harbour approach fairway. Fair-weather anchorage; W/NW exposure. Do not obstruct the fishing boat channel.

Hazards

  • !W/NW Atlantic exposure: breakwater provides partial N shelter only; any W or NW swell reaches the anchorage directly — depart to Viana do Castelo (7nm S) if conditions deteriorate
  • !Drying harbour: the small harbour dries at LW — do not attempt entry with any keel vessel at any state of tide
  • !Fishing traffic: local fishing boats use the harbour at all hours; keep clear of the harbour approach channel

Skipper's Tips

  • A useful lunch stop on a Viana–Caminha passage — anchor for 2–3 hours and explore the village on foot before continuing north
  • The fish restaurants here are excellent and very reasonably priced — better value than Viana do Castelo for a simple fresh fish lunch
  • Check the Leixões or Viana swell buoy data before deciding to overnight — even 1m swell at sea creates uncomfortable anchorage conditions here

Facilities

Fresh fish restaurants in the village — good grilled fish, seafood cataplana, and local Vinho Verde. The village has a small daily market for fresh provisions.

Best Months & Season

June, July, August, September

June–September in settled conditions. Best as a lunch stop or early overnight on a Viana–Caminha passage. W/NW exposure means Viana do Castelo is the safer overnight if any westerly is in the forecast.
