80m — absolute minimum set 80m alarm at this exposed beach. DAYLIGHT ONLY — do not overnight. This is a surf beach with consistent Atlantic swell; even in E winds a residual groundswell will be present. Be prepared to depart immediately. Viana do Castelo (5nm S) is the safe overnight base.

About This Anchorage

Afife Beach is a wild, unspoiled Atlantic surf beach on the northern Portuguese coast between Viana do Castelo and Vila Praia de Ancora. It is completely undeveloped by Portuguese standards — no harbour, no development, just a broad sweep of clean Atlantic sand backed by low dunes and coastal scrub. As a sailing destination it is purely a fair-weather lunch stop or swimming anchorage in genuinely calm conditions. The beach is well-known to local surfers and receives consistent Atlantic groundswell — making it a beautiful but distinctly challenging anchorage for anything other than a brief stop in flat calm. The coastal scenery here is outstanding: the green Minho hills, the Atlantic horizon, and the complete absence of tourist development make this one of the most authentically wild spots on the northern Portuguese coast.

Setting Your Anchor

Scope: Use 7:1 scope minimum in Atlantic conditions — river currents and overnight swell demand extra chain. In river estuaries, set anchor into the current direction.

Swell Assessment: Check swell buoy data (Leixões, Sines, or Figueira da Foz buoys on onda.pt or windguru.cz) before anchoring at any exposed Douro North Coast location. Residual Atlantic groundswell is present even in calm E winds.

Bar Crossing Protocol: For all river and estuary entries (Douro, Rio Lima, Rio Cávado, Rio Minho): contact the relevant port authority on VHF Ch 16 before approach; enter only at half-flood with swell below 1m; never attempt on an ebb tide or with breaking seas on the bar.

Tidal Planning: Spring tidal range 3–4m. Calculate tide height against draft for marina approach at Viana do Castelo (entrance obstruction 2.5m LWS). Factor strong ebb current into anchoring — set hook into the current.

Anchoring Rules

Permit required
No

Restrictions: Open beach — no facilities, no restrictions. Fair-weather daylight anchorage only. Be aware of surfers in the water — keep well clear of the surf zone when anchoring.

Hazards

  • !FULL ATLANTIC EXPOSURE: No natural shelter from W/NW swell — the beach is a surf break and swell is always present to some degree; depart immediately if swell builds
  • !Surf zone hazard: surfers in the water regularly — keep anchor position well clear of the break and the active surf zone
  • !Groundswell: residual Atlantic groundswell from NW creates a rolling anchorage even in calm winds — not a comfortable overnight stop for any crew

Skipper's Tips

  • Best approached on a morning passage from Viana do Castelo in pre-Nortada calm — anchor for a swim and lunch, depart by 13:00 before the Nortada builds
  • The Afife coast is one of the least-developed stretches of northern Portugal — worth seeing if conditions permit
  • Do not commit to this anchorage without checking swell buoy data (available at windsurfingreport.com or windguru.cz for this location)

Best Months & Season

July, August, September

July–September in flat calm conditions only. Even in summer the Atlantic groundswell makes this a challenging anchorage — use only when swell is confirmed minimal (below 0.5m at sea buoys) and wind is offshore NE/E. Do not plan overnight.
