75m off the Moledo beach in 3–7m sand. EXPOSED position — this is a fair-weather anchorage only. Set 75m alarm and have escape plan ready (Caminha river or Viana do Castelo 11nm S). Do not overnight here unless forecast is absolutely settled with no W/NW swell.
About This Anchorage
Moledo do Minho is a small beach village at the southern bank of the Minho River mouth, just 2nm south of Caminha — the last Portuguese village before the Spanish border. The beach anchorage provides a temporary stop in calm weather, with superb views up to the fortified town of Caminha to the north and the Galician town of A Guarda across the river in Spain. The Moledo beach also forms the south side of the Rio Minho approach channel — the S channel between the river mouth island and Moledo beach is the correct route to enter Caminha in the river. The Moledo Fortress (16th century, rebuilt 18th century) guards the beach from a small rocky outcrop. This is one of the most scenic anchorages on the northern Portuguese coast in fair weather, but the full Atlantic exposure makes it strictly a calm-conditions-only stop.

Setting Your Anchor
Scope: Use 7:1 scope minimum in Atlantic conditions — river currents and overnight swell demand extra chain. In river estuaries, set anchor into the current direction.
Swell Assessment: Check swell buoy data (Leixões, Sines, or Figueira da Foz buoys on onda.pt or windguru.cz) before anchoring at any exposed Douro North Coast location. Residual Atlantic groundswell is present even in calm E winds.
Bar Crossing Protocol: For all river and estuary entries (Douro, Rio Lima, Rio Cávado, Rio Minho): contact the relevant port authority on VHF Ch 16 before approach; enter only at half-flood with swell below 1m; never attempt on an ebb tide or with breaking seas on the bar.
Tidal Planning: Spring tidal range 3–4m. Calculate tide height against draft for marina approach at Viana do Castelo (entrance obstruction 2.5m LWS). Factor strong ebb current into anchoring — set hook into the current.
Anchoring Rules
- Anchoring fee
- Free
- Permit required
- No
Restrictions: Do not anchor in the Rio Minho approach channel (S channel between island and beach). Fair-weather anchorage only. Near Portuguese–Spanish border — standard Portuguese Maritime Authority reporting applies. Do not cross into Spanish waters (midline of the Minho River) without proper formalities.
Hazards
- !FULL ATLANTIC EXPOSURE: W/NW swell reaches directly onto this beach — do not anchor in any W/NW forecast or if groundswell is present
- !Proximity to Minho River bar: do not anchor in or near the S channel approach to the river bar — commercial fishing and local traffic use this channel
- !International border: Minho River midline is the Portuguese–Spanish border; anchor only on the Portuguese (S/W) side
Skipper's Tips
- →Use as a lunch stop on a passage to/from Caminha — the views up the Minho estuary and across to Galicia are outstanding
- →The Moledo Fortress is worth a short dinghy trip ashore — small but historically significant Atlantic coast fortification
- →If planning to enter the Rio Minho to Caminha, observe the bar from here first before committing — you can see the swell conditions on the bar clearly from this anchorage
