About This Anchorage

Póvoa de Varzim is a major northern Portuguese fishing town and beach resort with an active traditional fishing fleet — one of the most important on the Portuguese coast. As a sailing destination it is primarily a waypoint stop between Viana do Castelo and Leixões on a coastal passage. The harbour is a working fishing port first, with limited yacht facilities in a small marina area. The town has excellent daily fish markets and fresh seafood restaurants on the waterfront. The beach (Praia de Póvoa de Varzim) is one of the finest on this coast — broad, clean Atlantic sand backed by a lively resort town. Exposed to the prevailing NW Atlantic — only viable anchorage in settled E or NE conditions. Worth a brief stop for provisions and the fresh fish market, but Leixões or Viana are significantly better overnight bases.

Setting Your Anchor

Scope: Use 7:1 scope minimum in Atlantic conditions — river currents and overnight swell demand extra chain. In river estuaries, set anchor into the current direction.

Swell Assessment: Check swell buoy data (Leixões, Sines, or Figueira da Foz buoys on onda.pt or windguru.cz) before anchoring at any exposed Douro North Coast location. Residual Atlantic groundswell is present even in calm E winds.

Bar Crossing Protocol: For all river and estuary entries (Douro, Rio Lima, Rio Cávado, Rio Minho): contact the relevant port authority on VHF Ch 16 before approach; enter only at half-flood with swell below 1m; never attempt on an ebb tide or with breaking seas on the bar.

Tidal Planning: Spring tidal range 3–4m. Calculate tide height against draft for marina approach at Viana do Castelo (entrance obstruction 2.5m LWS). Factor strong ebb current into anchoring — set hook into the current.

Anchoring Rules

Anchoring fee
Free (off beach in calm only)
Permit required
No

Restrictions: Commercial fishing port — keep the fishing boat channels completely clear at all times. Marina berth required for overnight — contact harbour VHF Ch 16. W/NW exposure makes this unsuitable for overnight except in perfect, stable settled conditions with no westerly forecast.

Hazards

  • !W/NW exposure — Atlantic NW swell makes the anchorage uncomfortable and potentially dangerous within hours of conditions changing; Leixões is the safe default
  • !Active fishing fleet — heavy vessel traffic at all hours; keep harbour approach completely clear
  • !Harbour entrance approach in W swell requires care — check swell height and direction before approaching

Skipper's Tips

  • Best used as a fuel and provisions stop on a Viana–Leixões passage — do not plan overnight here unless the forecast is absolutely settled with no westerly component
  • The fish market and waterfront restaurants are excellent — worth a 2-hour stop for fresh provisions; the local lampreia (lamprey) in season is exceptional
  • The Casino de Póvoa is a Póvoa landmark — good restaurant if you need an evening ashore during a calm stop
