The Anchorage

Sandy beach anchorage SE of Izola's old town peninsula in 3–6m over sand with good holding. Protected from N and NW; open to S, SE and SW. One of the few natural beach anchorages on this section of the Slovenian coast. The beach is popular with local swimmers in July–August; maintain 50m+ clearance from the designated swimming zone. Approach from the N along the Izola waterfront. Anchor in minimum 5m at high tide to account for the 1m+ tidal range. Fair-weather daytime anchorage only — overnight only in firmly settled conditions with no S or SW forecast.

Setting Your Anchor

The bottom at Izola Beach Bay is primarily sand with reliable holding when properly set.

  1. Contact Marina Izola on VHF Ch 16 before arrival — 24-hour landing assistance is guaranteed. Max draft 4.5m. Confirm berth availability and depth for your keel.
  2. Anchor in 36m, adding 1–1.5m to the charted depth to account for the 1m+ Northern Adriatic tidal range.
  3. Deploy at least 5:1 scope (30m chain at 6m depth) — tidal movement increases rode workload compared to Mediterranean anchorages.
  4. Set firmly in reverse — 30–60 seconds at moderate throttle. Use the scope calculator to confirm adequate chain.

Recommended anchor types: Rocna, Mantus, Spade.

Overnight Anchoring & Anchor Alarm

Overnight stays at Izola Beach Bay are best in settled conditions — the anchorage is exposed to S and SE and SW winds. The Northern Adriatic tidal range of 1m+ means your boat will swing through a wider arc than in most Mediterranean anchorages as the rode angle changes through the tidal cycle.

Set your GPS anchor alarm to 60m radius before going below. 60m radius in 4–5m sand. Northern Adriatic tidal range — add 1m to alarm radius for tidal position shift. S/SE exposure means alarm is essential overnight.

Best May–September. The beach is at its best for swimming in July–August when the sea temperature reaches 24–26°C. May and early June are quieter and the anchorage is uncrowded. September is excellent — beach visitors thin rapidly and the anchorage is peaceful. Not suitable from October onwards as SW gale frequency increases.

Navigation Hazards

  • S/SE/SW exposure — uncomfortable in Jugo (Sirocco) or SW swell; leave for Marina Izola if southerly conditions are forecast
  • Swimmers in designated beach zone July–August — keep 50m+ from beach; paddle craft and kayaks also active in this area
  • Shoaling near the old harbour entrance — keep 100m+ from the old town breakwater; rocks extend from the harbour mole

Rules & Regulations

  • EU/Schengen — no customs formalities for EU boats arriving from EU ports. Non-EU citizens: register with police within 3 days. Non-EU flagged boats: 18-month temporary importation relief (TIR).
  • Anchoring fee: Free anchoring — no fee
  • Restrictions: Fair-weather anchorage only — open to S, SE, SW. Overnight only in firmly settled conditions with no southerly forecast. Keep 50m+ from beach and swimming zone in July–August. Shoaling near old harbour entrance — keep 100m+ from old town breakwater.

Skipper's Tips

  1. Arrive before 10:00 to find best position — beach anchorage fills quickly in July–August with day visitors
  2. Izola old town waterfront restaurants are among the best value in Slovenia — fish and seafood menus, good local wine
  3. Fair-weather anchorage only — leave for Marina Izola (0.5nm NW) if SW or SE swell is forecast; 24-hour landing assistance guaranteed
  4. Good sand holding — no posidonia complications here unlike some Croatian anchorages; set anchor well with engine reverse

A note on this guide: Data has been researched from multiple sailing sources and is provided in good faith. Conditions — depth, holding, regulations — can change. Always check forecasts and current official charts before visiting. Use a GPS anchor alarm and never rely solely on a guide for navigational decisions.

Sleep peacefully at Izola Beach Bay

Safety Anchor Alarm monitors your GPS position continuously and sounds a loud alarm the moment your boat drifts — essential in the Northern Adriatic where 1m+ tidal range creates wider swing arcs than Mediterranean sailors expect.
