Slovenia — Piran

Best Anchorages in Piran

The most scenic overnight stop on the northern Adriatic — a remarkably intact medieval Venetian town on a narrow promontory, with municipal mooring buoys off the western breakwater and sheltered coves on the Strunjan coast. These 8 verified anchorages cover the mooring field, bay approaches, and surrounding bays.

About Piran

Municipal Mooring Field

Piran is Slovenia's only significant non-marina overnight stop. The municipality maintains 20–30 laid mooring buoys off the western breakwater in 5–6m over sand and mud. Yachts moor stern-to or bows-to using Mediterranean mooring technique — ropes ashore to the breakwater iron rings. The charge is approximately €15–25 per night depending on boat length, paid at the harbour master's office on the waterfront. Arrive early in July–August; the field fills by midday.

Piran Old Town

Piran's old town is one of the best-preserved Venetian medieval towns on the Adriatic — predating even most Dalmatian examples. Tartini Square (named for the 18th-century violinist and composer born here), the Cathedral of St George on the hilltop, and the 13th-century defensive walls are all within 10 minutes' walk of the western breakwater. The town is a UNESCO candidate site. The restaurants on the main square are outstanding and a welcome change from Croatian prices.

Northern Adriatic Tides

Piran sits in the Gulf of Trieste, where tidal range reaches 1m or more at springs — far greater than the central or southern Adriatic. Add 1–2m to your anchor alarm radius to account for tidal movement on the rode. When anchoring in open bays, always add 1–1.5m to the depth shown on the chart to ensure adequate scope at all states of the tide. Consult ARSO tide tables (tide.si) before arriving.

Approach & Entry

Approach Piran from the south, leaving the light on Punta Madona (NW cape) to starboard. The harbour entrance faces SE. Maximum speed inside the harbour: 1 knot. Contact the harbour master on VHF Ch 16 for mooring buoy availability; Marina Portorož monitors VHF Ch 17. The bay can be uncomfortable in strong W or SW winds — if the forecast deteriorates, Marina Portorož is 2nm SE and fully protected.

Piran Municipal Moorings — Arrive Early in Jul–Aug

The 20–30 municipal mooring buoys off Piran's western breakwater are the only practical non-marina overnight option on Slovenia's 47km coast. Mooring fee: approximately €15–25/night depending on LOA. Stern-to or bows-to mooring using breakwater iron rings. In July–August the field is full by early afternoon — contact the harbour master on VHF Ch 16 before entering to confirm availability. Alternative: Marina Portorož (2nm SE, 1,000 berths, call ahead).

Strunjan Natura 2000 Reserve — Anchoring Forbidden in Central Zone

The Strunjan Landscape Park begins immediately NW of Piran. Navigation and anchoring are prohibited in the central marine reserve zone (Holy Cross Bay / Ronek) — a Natura 2000 EU-designated site with active enforcement. The outer zone permits navigation but not anchoring. The strunjan-south-edge and pacug-beach anchorages in this guide are located in the outer zone boundary areas — verify your position against official Slovenian charts before anchoring. Approach the reserve only in settled, fair-weather conditions for daytime use.
