Strunjan South Edge Anchorage Guide

Also known as: Strunjan outer boundary, Strunjan cliff anchorage, Krajinski Park Strunjan outer

Strunjan South Edge is the closest anchorage position to the Strunjan Landscape Park — at the outer edge of the park boundary, outside the strictly prohibited central marine reserve zone (Holy Cross Bay / Ronek, anchoring banned under Natura 2000 EU law). The position offers a spectacular view of the Strunjan flysch sea cliffs — the only sea cliffs on Slovenia's entire 47km coastline, formed by the alternating sandstone and marl layers of the flysch geological formation, with multiple visible colour banding. Anchoring is in 5-10m over rock and sand with fair holding. CRITICAL: Verify the reserve boundary on official charts before anchoring. Day use only — the W/SW/NW exposure and fair rocky holding make this a scenic stopping point, not an overnight position. Marina Portorož (2nm SE) is the appropriate overnight base.

Recommended Anchor Alarm Radius

90m alarm radius for the Strunjan outer boundary position in 5-10m over rock and sand. Fair holding on mixed bottom — confirm anchor is in sand before relying on the alarm. The tidal range (1m+ at springs) requires anchoring at 8-9m at high tide to maintain depth. The critical constraint at this position is positional accuracy relative to the Natura 2000 reserve boundary — the alarm radius of 90m must be set conservatively to ensure the boat does not swing into the prohibited reserve zone. Verify the exact reserve boundary coordinates on official charts (Slovenian Hydrographic Institute) before anchoring. This is a daytime scenic anchorage only — the W/SW/NW exposure and fair rocky holding make overnight use inappropriate.

The Anchorage

CRITICAL REGULATORY NOTE: This position is at the outer boundary of the Strunjan Landscape Park. The central marine reserve zone (Holy Cross Bay / Ronek) — fully enclosed within the park — is STRICTLY PROHIBITED for anchoring under Natura 2000 EU law with active enforcement. This outer anchorage is technically outside the protected reserve boundary, but the boundary must be verified on official Slovenian waters charts before anchoring. Do NOT enter the central marine reserve under any circumstances. Anchoring at this outer position is in 5-10m over rock and sand with fair holding — confirm anchor is on sand, not rock. The remarkable flysch sea cliffs of Strunjan (the only sea cliffs on Slovenia's 47km coastline, formed by alternating sandstone and marl layers of the flysch formation) are visible from this position in their full extent. Protected from NE and N; fully open to W, SW, and NW. Tidal range (1m+): anchor at 8-9m at high tide to maintain depth at low water. Day use only — the open W/SW exposure and rocky bottom make this unsuitable for overnight.

Setting Your Anchor

The bottom at Strunjan South Edge is primarily rock and sand with variable holding that requires extra attention.

  1. Check VHF Ch 16 for mooring buoy availability before entering Piran harbour — the western breakwater mooring field fills early in July–August. If buoys are full, Marina Portorož (2nm SE) is the alternative.
  2. Approach from the south at 1 knot maximum inside the harbour. Anchor in 510m, adding 1–1.5m to the charted depth to account for the 1m+ tidal range.
  3. Deploy at least 5:1 scope (50m chain at 10m depth) — tidal movement means the rode will work harder than in the Mediterranean.
  4. Set firmly in reverse — 30–60 seconds at moderate throttle. Use the scope calculator to confirm adequate chain.

Recommended anchor types: Rocna, Mantus.

Overnight Anchoring & Anchor Alarm

Overnight stays at Strunjan South Edge are best in settled conditions — the anchorage is exposed to W and SW and NW winds. The Northern Adriatic tidal range of 1m+ is the key consideration: your boat will swing through a wider arc than in most Mediterranean anchorages as the rode angle changes through the tidal cycle.

Set your GPS anchor alarm to 90m radius before going below.

Best May–September in settled morning conditions only. The west-facing cliff exposure means afternoon use (after the Maestral builds at 12:00-14:00) is uncomfortable. Best in May and June when Bora frequency is lower and early morning settled conditions are reliable. July-August: Maestral is strongest and most regular — a morning-only stop. September: quieter and the cliff light in September morning is particularly good for photography. Not suitable from October onwards.

Navigation Hazards

  • CRITICAL — Natura 2000 reserve boundary: the central marine reserve zone (Holy Cross Bay / Ronek) is immediately inshore of this position; anchoring inside the reserve is a serious infringement under EU and Slovenian law with active enforcement; verify the reserve boundary on official charts and monitor GPS position carefully at all times
  • W/SW/NW exposure: fully open to the western arc — day use only; in afternoon Maestral (NW, F3-5) swell builds against this cliff face and the anchorage becomes uncomfortable
  • Rocky bottom: the outer Strunjan cliff base has rock and sand bottom — confirm anchor is on sand; rocky bottom can make retrieval difficult if the anchor has lodged in a crevice
  • Tidal range: 1m+ at springs — anchor at 8-9m at high tide; tidal fall at low water reduces depth by 1m+
  • Bora: no shelter; leave immediately for Marina Portorož (2nm SE) if Bora is forecast
  • Rockfall hazard: the flysch cliffs are actively eroding; do not anchor directly below the cliff face — maintain 50m+ clearance from the cliff base

Rules & Regulations

  • EU/Schengen — no customs formalities for EU boats arriving from EU ports. Non-EU citizens: register with police within 3 days. Non-EU flagged boats: 18-month temporary importation relief (TIR).
  • Anchoring fee: Free anchoring — but ONLY outside the Strunjan Landscape Park central marine reserve boundary. Verify position on official charts.
  • Restrictions: CRITICAL: Do NOT enter or anchor in the Strunjan central marine reserve zone (Holy Cross Bay / Ronek) — Natura 2000 EU designation with active enforcement and substantial fines. Verify the reserve boundary on official Slovenian waters charts (Slovenian Hydrographic Institute) before anchoring. Day use only at this outer position — not suitable for overnight. Fair holding on rock/sand — confirm anchor on sand before leaving unattended.
  • Strunjan Nature Reserve: Central zone (Holy Cross Bay / Ronek) — navigation and anchoring prohibited (Natura 2000). Outer zone — navigation permitted, no anchoring. Verify position on official charts.

Skipper's Tips

  1. Approach from the S (from Portorož direction) along the boundary of the reserve — do not approach from the N (reserve interior) as this risks entering the prohibited zone
  2. The flysch cliff geology is spectacular from the water — the alternating sandstone (grey) and marl (reddish-brown) layers are visible in cross-section where the cliff face has eroded; nowhere else on Slovenia's coast are these formations exposed at sea level
  3. Bring binoculars — peregrine falcons nest in the cliff faces of Strunjan and are often visible from the water in spring and early summer
  4. This is a photographic and geological scenic stop — anchor for 1-2 hours in settled morning conditions (before the afternoon Maestral builds) and return to Portorož or Piran for the night
  5. Verify GPS position against the charted reserve boundary before dropping the anchor — the outer boundary is close and the consequences of anchoring inside the reserve are significant

A note on this guide: Data has been researched from multiple sailing sources and is provided in good faith. Conditions — depth, holding, regulations — can change. Always check forecasts and current official charts before visiting. Use a GPS anchor alarm and never rely solely on a guide for navigational decisions.

Sleep peacefully at Strunjan South Edge

Safety Anchor Alarm monitors your GPS position continuously and sounds a loud alarm the moment your boat drifts — essential in the Northern Adriatic where 1m+ tidal range creates wider swing arcs than Mediterranean sailors expect.
