Open anchorage NE of Marina Portorož in 4–8m over sand and mud — one of the closest free anchoring options to the marina facilities. Good holding with proper scope. Protected from the N sector (NW, N, NE) but exposed to S and SW swell. Marina pontoons and fuel dock accessible by dinghy in calm conditions. Popular with boats waiting for marina berths or visiting for short stays. Tidal range 1m+: anchor in 6–7m at high tide to maintain clearance. Keep clear of Marina Portorož approach channel — the main entrance lies SW of this position. Ferry wake from Portorož–Trieste hydrofoil in summer.
Setting Your Anchor
The bottom at Portorož Yacht Anchorage is primarily sand and mud with reliable holding when properly set.
- Call Marina Portorož on VHF Ch 17 to confirm berth availability before approaching — especially in July–August when the marina is at capacity.
- Approach from the NW. Entrance channel: 22m wide, 3.5m deep. Anchor in 4–8m, adding 1–1.5m to the charted depth for the Northern Adriatic tidal range.
- Deploy at least 5:1 scope (40m chain at 8m depth) — tidal movement means the rode will work harder than in the Mediterranean.
- Set firmly in reverse — 30–60 seconds at moderate throttle. Use the scope calculator to confirm adequate chain.
Recommended anchor types: Rocna, Mantus, Spade.
Overnight Anchoring & Anchor Alarm
Overnight stays at Portorož Yacht Anchorage are best in settled conditions — the anchorage is exposed to S and SW and W winds. The Northern Adriatic tidal range of 1m+ is the key consideration: your boat will swing through a wider arc than in most Mediterranean anchorages as the rode angle changes through the tidal cycle.
Set your GPS anchor alarm to 65m radius before going below. 65m in 5–6m sand/mud. Set well before departing boat. Northern Adriatic tidal range 1m+ — add 15m to your usual Mediterranean alarm setting. The S/SW open exposure means in any southerly the boat will sheer and require full scope deployment.
Best May–September. Popular as a free holding anchorage while waiting for a marina berth, or as a short-stay alternative to the marina. July–August: ferry and hydrofoil traffic is at its highest — wake is an overnight consideration. September is the best month — traffic decreases, weather remains settled, and marina berth pressure eases. Not suitable for overnight from October onwards as S and SW gale frequency increases.
Navigation Hazards
- S/SW swell exposure — no protection from southern quadrant; anchorage deteriorates rapidly when swell develops; monitor forecast closely overnight
- Boat traffic from Marina Portorož entrance — keep clear of approach channel to the SW; monitor VHF Ch 16 for marina traffic
- Ferry wake from Portorož–Trieste hydrofoil in summer — wake can be significant and arrives without warning
- Tidal range 1m+ — anchor at 6–7m at high tide to maintain keel clearance at low water
- Bora: limited shelter; Marina Portorož is 0.4nm SW — proceed there if Bora is forecast

Always check forecasts and current official charts before visiting. Use a GPS anchor alarm and never rely solely on a guide for navigational decisions.

Safety Anchor Alarm monitors your GPS position continuously and sounds a loud alarm the moment your boat drifts — essential in the Northern Adriatic where 1m+ tidal range creates wider swing arcs than Mediterranean sailors expect.
