Strunjan Outer Boundary Anchorage Anchorage Guide

Also known as: Strunjan cliff anchorage, Strunjan outer zone, Krajinski Park outer boundary

Day anchorage just outside the Strunjan Landscape Park outer boundary — the closest safe anchoring position to the Strunjan sea cliffs without entering the protected reserve. Dramatic flysch cliff scenery. Anchor in sand patches only — rock holding is unreliable. This position is outside both the central Natura 2000 zone (anchoring forbidden) and the outer park zone (no anchoring); it is in open water just SE of the outer park boundary. Excellent access by dinghy to the cliff base. Fair-weather daytime use only — W exposure makes overnight dangerous.

Recommended Anchor Alarm Radius

70m radius in 6–8m. Rock and sand patches — anchor in sand only, verify holding carefully. Extra alarm radius ensures you stay outside the Strunjan Natura 2000 central zone boundary. Any drag toward the W is open water; any drag toward the E risks entering the protected reserve — monitor GPS position carefully.

The Anchorage

CRITICAL REGULATORY NOTE: This position is in open water just SE of the Strunjan Landscape Park outer boundary. The central Natura 2000 marine reserve zone (Holy Cross Bay / Ronek) is STRICTLY PROHIBITED for anchoring — active enforcement with substantial fines. The outer park zone permits navigation but NOT anchoring. This position must be verified on official Slovenian waters charts before anchoring. Anchor in sand patches only — rock holding is unreliable; check bottom type carefully. Remarkable flysch cliff scenery. The 70m alarm radius ensures the boat stays outside the Strunjan Natura 2000 central zone boundary. Fair-weather daytime only — W/NW/N exposure makes overnight dangerous.

Setting Your Anchor

The bottom at Strunjan Outer Boundary Anchorage is primarily rock and sand with variable holding that requires extra attention.

  1. Call Marina Portorož on VHF Ch 17 to confirm berth availability before approaching — especially in July–August when the marina is at capacity.
  2. Approach from the NW. Entrance channel: 22m wide, 3.5m deep. Anchor in 510m, adding 1–1.5m to the charted depth for the Northern Adriatic tidal range.
  3. Deploy at least 5:1 scope (50m chain at 10m depth) — tidal movement means the rode will work harder than in the Mediterranean.
  4. Set firmly in reverse — 30–60 seconds at moderate throttle. Use the scope calculator to confirm adequate chain.

Recommended anchor types: Rocna, Mantus.

Overnight Anchoring & Anchor Alarm

Overnight stays at Strunjan Outer Boundary Anchorage are best in settled conditions — the anchorage is exposed to W and NW and N winds. The Northern Adriatic tidal range of 1m+ is the key consideration: your boat will swing through a wider arc than in most Mediterranean anchorages as the rode angle changes through the tidal cycle.

Set your GPS anchor alarm to 70m radius before going below.

Best May–September in settled morning conditions only. The west-facing cliff position means afternoon use (after the Maestral builds at 12:00–14:00) is uncomfortable. Best in May and June when Bora frequency is lower and early morning settled conditions are reliable. July–August: Maestral is strongest — morning-only stop. September: quieter and the cliff light in morning is excellent for photography. Not suitable from October onwards.

Navigation Hazards

  • CRITICAL: Verify position outside Strunjan Natura 2000 central zone before anchoring — enforcement active; anchoring inside the reserve carries substantial fines under EU and Slovenian law
  • W/NW exposure — deteriorates rapidly in Bora or Maestral; afternoon sea breeze (Maestral, NW F3–5) builds against the cliff face; morning-only use recommended
  • Rock bottom — anchor in sand patches only, drag risk on rock; bring a dive mask to confirm anchor placement
  • Poor holding on rock — test set thoroughly before leaving boat; consider a trip line in case of lodged anchor
  • Rockfall hazard from flysch cliffs — do not anchor directly below the cliff face; maintain 50m+ clearance from the cliff base
  • Bora: no shelter; leave immediately for Marina Portorož (1.7nm SE) if Bora signs appear

Rules & Regulations

  • EU/Schengen — no customs formalities for EU boats arriving from EU ports. Non-EU citizens: register with police within 3 days. Non-EU flagged boats: 18-month temporary importation relief (TIR).
  • Anchoring fee: Free — outer zone navigation permitted; no anchoring inside reserve boundary
  • Restrictions: CRITICAL: Do NOT enter or anchor in the Strunjan central marine reserve zone (Holy Cross Bay / Ronek) — Natura 2000 EU designation with active enforcement and substantial fines. Verify position on official Slovenian charts before anchoring. Anchor in sand patches only — rock bottom has poor holding. Day use only — W/NW exposure makes overnight dangerous. Rockfall hazard: maintain 50m+ clearance from cliff base.
  • Strunjan Nature Reserve: Central zone (Holy Cross Bay / Ronek) — navigation and anchoring prohibited (Natura 2000). Outer zone — navigation permitted, no anchoring. Verify position against official Slovenian charts.

Skipper's Tips

  1. Verify your position carefully against official charts — Strunjan central zone boundary is strictly enforced
  2. Anchor in sand patches only — rock bottom has poor holding
  3. Access cliffs by dinghy — extraordinary flysch geology (alternating sandstone and marl)
  4. Stjuža lagoon visible from cliff path — approach by tender only, no anchoring inside
  5. Fair weather only — no W protection; Marina Portorož 1.7nm SE if conditions deteriorate

A note on this guide: Data has been researched from multiple sailing sources and is provided in good faith. Conditions — depth, holding, regulations — can change. Always check forecasts and current official charts before visiting. Use a GPS anchor alarm and never rely solely on a guide for navigational decisions.

Sleep peacefully at Strunjan Outer Boundary Anchorage

Safety Anchor Alarm monitors your GPS position continuously and sounds a loud alarm the moment your boat drifts — essential in the Northern Adriatic where 1m+ tidal range creates wider swing arcs than Mediterranean sailors expect.
