Çukurbağ Peninsula Anchorage Guide

Also known as: Cukurbag, Çukurbağ Yarımadası, Çukurbağ Koyu

Çukurbağ Peninsula anchors the western approach to Kaş Bay, offering a natural anchorage on its west side that provides good shelter from the north and northeast — the predominant summer meltemi direction. Sand and rock bottom gives adequate holding when the anchor is set in clear sand. With Kaş town just 1.5nm away by dinghy, Çukurbağ offers a quieter and more peaceful overnight alternative to the busy town quay for sailors who prefer solitude near a well-provisioned port.

The Anchorage

The west-facing anchorage of the Çukurbağ Peninsula benefits from the peninsula's bulk blocking north and northeast winds. Sand and rock bottom — find clear sand for reliable holding. Calm and comfortable in northerly (meltemi) conditions.

Setting Your Anchor

The bottom at Çukurbağ Peninsula is primarily sand and rock with reliable holding when properly set. Use the following approach:

  1. Approach slowly and check your depth sounder on the way in. At 515m, deploy at minimum 7:1 scope (105m chain at 15m depth).
  2. Drop into the wind or current and pay out chain steadily as the boat drifts back — do not allow chain to pile on the anchor.
  3. Set firmly in reverse. Apply moderate throttle astern for 30–60 seconds. The chain should tighten without the boat moving backwards.
  4. Take a GPS bearing. Note your position once set and compare to the scope calculator to confirm you have adequate chain for the depth.

Recommended anchor types for this bottom: Rocna, Delta. See our guide to anchor types by bottom for detailed comparisons.

Overnight Anchoring & Anchor Alarm

Overnight stays at Çukurbağ Peninsula are feasible but require monitoring. The anchorage is exposed to S and SW and W winds.

Set your GPS anchor alarm to 55m radius before going below for the night.55m on the W side of Çukurbağ. Good shelter from northerly meltemi — the peninsula acts as a natural windbreak. SW and W exposure remains; avoid overnight if any westerly or southerly is forecast. In settled northerly conditions this is a pleasant alternative to the busy Kaş quay.

May–October in settled northerly conditions. Excellent alternative to Kaş harbour when the town quay is full. Very low traffic — the locality keeps most charter boats on the quay or at Kekova.

Navigation Hazards

  • S/SW/W exposure — not suitable when any westerly or southerly is in the forecast
  • Rocky ends of the peninsula — give both headlands at least 100m clearance on approach
  • Rock patches in the sand — find clear sandy ground before setting; snorkel to verify if depth allows
  • Dinghy trip to Kaş town in strong meltemi can be choppy and wet — time excursions around the wind

Rules & Regulations

  • Permit: Not required
  • Anchoring fee: Free
  • Restrictions: Give the peninsula headland 100m clearance — rocks extend from both ends. No anchoring in the boat traffic lane between Çukurbağ and Kaş harbour.

Skipper's Tips

  1. Use as a quieter alternative to Kaş quay in settled northerly conditions — enjoy Kaş by dinghy
  2. The peninsula provides natural windbreak for the meltemi — very comfortable in Force 3–4 northerlies
  3. Anchor in the sandy patches between the rocky sections for best holding
  4. Morning is the calmest time to dinghy to Kaş — the meltemi builds through the afternoon

A note on this guide: The data in this guide has been researched from multiple sailing sources and is provided in good faith. Anchorage conditions — including depth, holding, and local regulations — can change. Before visiting, always check current weather forecasts, NAVTEX and VHF weather bulletins, and consult your up-to-date charts. Use a GPS anchor alarm and never rely solely on a guide for navigational decisions.
