Kuşadası Harbour Anchorage Guide
Also known as: Güvercin Ada, Pigeon Island Anchorage, Kusadasi Port
Kuşadası is one of the most visited ports on the Turkish Aegean, sitting at the gateway to ancient Ephesus (3km inland). The town harbour is anchored by the iconic Güvercin Ada (Pigeon Island) fortress, connected to shore by a causeway. Kuşadası is a major cruise ship port — multiple ships can be in port simultaneously — and the marina serves as a hub for charter flotillas. Despite the crowds, the anchorage near Pigeon Island is workable, and the marina is well-equipped. The ancient ruins of Ephesus are the primary visitor draw.

Recommended Anchor Alarm Radius
60m in the Güvercin Ada anchorage. 25m if secured in the marina. The primary hazard is the cruise ship berth — give 200m clearance at all times. Large cruise ships arrive/depart with tug assistance and create significant wash. SW/W exposure in the anchorage — meltemi can swing westerly in the afternoon.
Güvercin Ada (Pigeon Island) anchorage: 60m recommended — Anchorage NW of Güvercin Ada (Pigeon Island) in 5–10m on sand and mud.
Kuşadası Marina (full berths): 25m recommended — Full-service marina with floating pontoons, water, electricity, fuel, WiFi, and repair facilities.
Anchoring Zones
Kuşadası Harbour has 2 distinct anchoring zones, each with different depth, holding, and exposure characteristics. Choose the zone that matches your boat size and the expected overnight conditions.
Zone 1: Güvercin Ada (Pigeon Island) anchorage
- Depth: 5–12m
- Bottom: sand, mud
- Holding: Good Holding
- Protected from: N, NE, E, SE
- Exposed to: SW, W
- Recommended alarm radius: 60m
Anchorage NW of Güvercin Ada (Pigeon Island) in 5–10m on sand and mud. Protected from N/NE by the town waterfront. Give 200m clearance to the cruise ship manoeuvring area — large vessels arrive with tugs and swing in tight arcs. The island itself is a castle ruin connected to shore by a causeway.
Zone 2: Kuşadası Marina (full berths)
- Depth: 3–6m
- Bottom: sand, mud
- Holding: Excellent Holding
- Protected from: N, NE, E, SE, S, SW, W, NW
- Recommended alarm radius: 25m
Full-service marina with floating pontoons, water, electricity, fuel, WiFi, and repair facilities. All-weather shelter. Very busy in July–August — reserve in advance. Cruise ship arrivals can make the marina entrance channel temporarily restricted.
Setting Your Anchor
The bottom at Kuşadası Harbour is primarily sand and mud with reliable holding when properly set. Use the following approach:
- Approach slowly and check your depth sounder on the way in. At 5–12m, deploy at minimum 7:1 scope (84m chain at 12m depth).
- Drop into the wind or current and pay out chain steadily as the boat drifts back — do not allow chain to pile on the anchor.
- Set firmly in reverse. Apply moderate throttle astern for 30–60 seconds. The chain should tighten without the boat moving backwards.
- Take a GPS bearing. Note your position once set and compare to the scope calculator to confirm you have adequate chain for the depth.
Recommended anchor types for this bottom: Rocna, Delta, Spade. See our guide to anchor types by bottom for detailed comparisons.
Overnight Anchoring & Anchor Alarm
Overnight stays at Kuşadası Harbour are feasible but require monitoring. The anchorage is exposed to SW and W winds.
Set your GPS anchor alarm to 60m radius before going below for the night.60m in the Güvercin Ada anchorage. 25m if secured in the marina. The primary hazard is the cruise ship berth — give 200m clearance at all times. Large cruise ships arrive/depart with tug assistance and create significant wash. SW/W exposure in the anchorage — meltemi can swing westerly in the afternoon.
May–October. July–August is the busiest and most congested period with maximum cruise ship and charter activity. May–June and September–October are much more manageable. The town itself stays lively well into October.
Navigation Hazards

- SW/W exposure in anchorage — meltemi can swing westerly; marina is safer for overnight
- Very heavy tourist boat traffic throughout the day in summer season
- Anchorage crowded July–August — early arrival essential for a good position

A note on this guide: The data in this guide has been researched from multiple sailing sources and is provided in good faith. Anchorage conditions — including depth, holding, and local regulations — can change. Before visiting, always check current weather forecasts, NAVTEX and VHF weather bulletins, and consult your up-to-date charts. Use a GPS anchor alarm and never rely solely on a guide for navigational decisions.
