Cristian Marina, Durrës Anchorage Guide

Also known as: Durres Marina, Marina Cristian, Durrësi Marina, Durazzo Marina

Cristian Marina is the only dedicated marina facility in northern Albania and the recommended base for cruising yachts visiting Durrës. Located inside Albania's main commercial port on the S side of the port basin, the marina is small but fully functional — berths using shore lines (Mediterranean stern-to or alongside), electricity, water (non-potable), toilets, and showers. Durrës is an official Albanian port of entry and a mandatory clearance stop for boats arriving from the north; the clearance agent can be arranged through the marina. The commercial port handles heavy international ferry traffic to Italy (Brindisi, Bari, and Ancona), and the port entrance on the N side of the Durrës headland sees constant ferry movements — approach the port entrance with extreme caution, maintain VHF watch on Ch 12, and yield to all commercial and ferry traffic. Durrës city (pop ~200,000) is Albania's second-largest city with full provisioning, restaurants, banks, ATMs, and transport links. The Roman amphitheatre (2nd century AD, one of the largest in the Roman world, seating 20,000) is 15 minutes walk from the marina — the finest Roman monument in Albania and an extraordinary sight in the middle of a modern city.

Recommended Anchor Alarm Radius

40m alarm radius for marina berth — the marina is small and the enclosed commercial port provides all-round protection. The primary risks here are not weather-related but operational: ferry traffic in the port entrance, commercial shipping movements, and the critical importance of calling ahead for berth availability. The Bora (NE katabatic) is the dominant hazard on the Albanian Adriatic coast — gusts to 70+ knots have been recorded in Durrës Bay in severe events. However, once inside Cristian Marina within the port basin, the marina itself is well-protected. The danger from Bora is during approach or departure — do not depart in Bora conditions regardless of the marina protection. Monitor VHF Ch 12/16 continuously during port transit for ferry and commercial traffic instructions from port VTS.

The Anchorage

Cristian Marina occupies a small but functional area inside the Durrës commercial port, on the S side of the port basin clear of the main ferry terminal. Berths are using Mediterranean-style stern-to or alongside with shore lines — anchoring off the bow with a stern line to the quay is the standard configuration. Water (non-potable), electricity, toilets, and showers are available. The marina is enclosed within the commercial port and offers all-round protection from wind and swell. The 40m alarm radius is set for the marina berth — the confined space means any significant movement should be investigated immediately. Call ahead on VHF Ch 12 before entering as the marina is small and space fills quickly in the sailing season. The marina manager speaks English and is helpful with clearance formalities. Access to the port is from the N entrance of the Durrës headland — follow the port entrance channel and proceed S inside the port basin to the marina sign.

Setting Your Anchor

The bottom at Cristian Marina, Durrës is primarily mud and sand with reliable holding when properly set.

  1. Check Bora forecast before anchoring — cap clouds over the Dinaric Alps to the NE are the warning sign. Bora gusts to 70+ knots arrive with minimal notice. If any Bora is forecast, use Cristian Marina shore lines rather than anchoring in exposed positions.
  2. Approach slowly and check your depth sounder. At 25m, deploy minimum 7:1 scope (35m chain at 5m depth).
  3. Drop into the wind and pay out chain steadily as the boat drifts back.
  4. Set firmly in reverse — 30–60 seconds at moderate throttle. Use the scope calculator to confirm adequate chain.

Recommended anchor types: Rocna, Mantus, Spade.

Overnight Anchoring & Anchor Alarm

Overnight stays at Cristian Marina, Durrës are excellent — all-round protection means minimal boat movement.

Set your GPS anchor alarm to 40m radius before going below. 40m alarm radius for marina berth — the marina is small and the enclosed commercial port provides all-round protection. Best May–October. Cristian Marina operates year-round and is the safest and most comfortable option in northern Albania throughout the sailing season. June–September sees the highest traffic through the marina as boats transit the Adriatic. May and October are quieter with easier berth availability. The Bora is more frequent in autumn (October–November) and spring (March–April) — plan passages accordingly and do not depart with any NE component in the forecast. Winter use is possible but the Bora frequency and intensity increase significantly November–February.

Navigation Hazards

  • Ferry traffic (Brindisi/Bari/Ancona lines): international ro-ro ferries operate through the port entrance at speed on fixed schedules; they have right of way and will not deviate; night approaches to Durrës port require continuous radar watch and VHF Ch 12 monitoring — the ferries move fast and the approach channel is shared
  • Bora NE katabatic wind: the Adriatic Bora is the primary hazard on the northern Albanian coast; gusts to 70+ knots have been recorded in Durrës Bay during severe events; cap clouds (arch clouds) streaming over the NE mountains are the warning sign; do not depart in Bora conditions — wait in the marina until the Bora passes completely
  • Commercial port traffic and VTS: Durrës is a major commercial port with cargo ships, tankers, and ferries; all movements are under port VTS control; maintain continuous VHF watch on Ch 12 inside the port and follow all VTS instructions without delay
  • Berth availability — call ahead: Cristian Marina is small and space is genuinely limited; arriving without a confirmed berth risks being turned away; contact the marina by VHF Ch 12 or phone well before arrival, ideally 24 hours in advance in summer
  • Clearance formalities: Albania requires a mandatory clearance agent and all documentation must be completed before any crew go ashore; the marina can arrange the agent but have documents ready and agent contact numbers established before entering Albanian waters

Rules & Regulations

  • FORBIDDEN north of Vlorë: Anchoring outside Durrës and Shëngjin is strictly forbidden and enforced by armed Coast Guard. Use official ports only.
  • Albania entry — clearance agent mandatory: All foreign yachts must use a local clearance agent (~€100–150). Call Cristian Marina ahead on VHF Ch 12. Fly yellow Q flag on entry.
  • Anchoring fee: Berth fee applies — contact marina in advance for current rates. Cristian Marina: VHF Ch 12 for berth booking and rates.
  • Maximum stay: 14 days
  • Restrictions: Marina berths must be pre-arranged by VHF or phone — do not arrive and expect a free berth without notice. Follow all port VTS instructions for commercial port movements. Ferry traffic (Brindisi/Bari/Ancona) has right of way throughout the port basin. Do not obstruct the ferry terminal approach in the N sector of the port.

Skipper's Tips

  1. Call Cristian Marina on VHF Ch 12 when 2–3nm from the port entrance to confirm a berth is available and get approach instructions — the marina manager will guide you in and arrange berth allocation; arrival without prior contact is not recommended
  2. Arrange the clearance agent before departure from your previous port — agents advertise on Noonsite Albania and the Adriatic cruising forums; the agent will meet you at the quay and handle customs, border police, and port authority paperwork simultaneously, making the process efficient
  3. The Roman amphitheatre of Durrës (Amfiteatri Romak) is 15 minutes walk from the marina and is extraordinary — 2nd century AD, one of the largest in the Roman world with a seating capacity of 20,000, discovered in 1966 when a house collapsed into the excavation; the site is partially open to the sky and the scale in the middle of the modern city is striking
  4. Stock up fully in Durrës before departing south — it is the best-provisioned port in northern Albania with supermarkets, a daily market, and access to diesel and petrol; Shëngjin to the N has very limited provisioning
  5. If the Bora is forecast (check ECMWF and Windy.com with Adriatic-specific models), plan for a stay of 2–5 days at minimum — the Bora on the Albanian Adriatic can be both violent and persistent; the marina is comfortable and Durrës city is worth the enforced stop

A note on this guide: Data has been researched from multiple sailing sources and is provided in good faith. Conditions — depth, holding, regulations — can change. Always check forecasts and current official charts before visiting. Use a GPS anchor alarm and never rely solely on a guide for navigational decisions.
