Durrës South Bay Anchorage Guide
Also known as: Durres S Bay, Durrës Amphitheatre Bay, Durres South Anchorage
The bay immediately S of Durrës city lies below the hillside where Albania's most extraordinary Roman monument stands — the 2nd-century AD Roman amphitheatre of Durrës, one of the largest in the Roman world with a seating capacity of 20,000, partially excavated and open to the sky in the middle of the modern city. The anchorage in 5–10m over sand and mud is used as an overflow position when Cristian Marina is full, or as a day anchorage for visiting the amphitheatre (15 minutes walk from the beach up the hill). The Durrës headland provides partial W protection; the bay is open to NE (Bora), N, and E. International ferry traffic (Brindisi, Bari, Ancona) exits the port N of this position — maintain continuous awareness of ferry movements. Always prefer Cristian Marina for overnight stays — the marina's all-round protection within the commercial port is significantly safer than this bay's exposed position.

Recommended Anchor Alarm Radius
90m alarm radius for the S bay in 5–10m. The NE and N exposure is the critical risk — in Bora conditions this bay is as exposed as the outer bay to the N. The 90m radius accounts for scope in the deeper sections; anchor in 5–6m where possible to reduce the scope required and improve alarm sensitivity. Ferry traffic from the Durrës port entrance passes N of this position — the 90m radius also provides a buffer from accidental drift toward the port entrance lane. Always prefer Cristian Marina for overnight — this bay is an overflow and day stop only. If anchored here overnight, assign an anchor watch and do not allow the crew to sleep through a Bora event.

The bay immediately S of Durrës city, below the hillside where the Roman amphitheatre stands, in 5–10m over sand and mud. The Durrës headland provides partial protection from W by deflecting wind and swell. The bay is exposed to NE (Bora), N, and E — in Bora conditions the bay receives the full force of the NE katabatic with gusts to 70+ knots possible. Sand and mud holding is good in calm conditions — the anchor sets well and holds with engine reverse confirmation. This bay is used primarily as an overflow anchorage when Cristian Marina is full, or as a day anchorage with shore access to the Roman amphitheatre (15 minutes walk up the hill from the beach). Ferry traffic exiting Durrës port passes N of this position — maintain situational awareness of ferry movements at all times. The 90m alarm radius is the minimum appropriate for this bay given the depth range and exposure.
Setting Your Anchor
The bottom at Durrës South Bay is primarily sand and mud with reliable holding when properly set.
- Check Bora forecast before anchoring — cap clouds over the Dinaric Alps to the NE are the warning sign. Bora gusts to 70+ knots arrive with minimal notice. If any Bora is forecast, use Cristian Marina shore lines rather than anchoring in exposed positions.
- Approach slowly and check your depth sounder. At 5–10m, deploy minimum 7:1 scope (70m chain at 10m depth).
- Drop into the wind and pay out chain steadily as the boat drifts back.
- Set firmly in reverse — 30–60 seconds at moderate throttle. Use the scope calculator to confirm adequate chain.
Recommended anchor types: Rocna, Mantus, Spade.
Overnight Anchoring & Anchor Alarm
Overnight stays at Durrës South Bay are feasible in settled conditions but require vigilance — the anchorage is exposed to NE and N and E winds.
Set your GPS anchor alarm to 90m radius before going below. 90m alarm radius for the S bay in 5–10m. Best May–October as a day anchorage. July and August see the highest temperatures and the most dramatic Roman amphitheatre context — the site is impressive in summer light and the walk from the beach is rewarding. May, June, and September are quieter and the beach access is easier. October remains viable in settled weather but the ferry traffic pattern changes with the end of peak summer season. This bay should not be considered for overnight stays except as a last resort when Cristian Marina is unavailable and in completely settled conditions with a full anchor watch.
Navigation Hazards
- NE Bora exposure: the bay is fully open to NE, N, and E; in Bora conditions (gusts to 70+ knots in severe Adriatic events) this bay is untenable; if Bora is forecast, move to Cristian Marina inside the commercial port immediately — the marina's enclosed position provides the only safe shelter in Durrës for severe Bora
- Ferry traffic from port entrance: international ro-ro ferries exit the Durrës port entrance immediately N of this bay at speed; ferry wash reaches the anchorage and anchor scope loading is progressive throughout the day; maintain awareness of ferry schedules (VHF Ch 12) and anchor well clear of the port entrance fairway
- Overflow anchorage character: this bay functions as overflow for Cristian Marina and is not a primary anchorage; the holding is good but the exposure means any night stay requires a continuous anchor watch and immediate exit capability
- Depth variation increasing scope requirement: the bay ranges 5–10m over the anchoring area; in the deeper sections a 6:1 scope ratio requires 60m of chain; confirm depth carefully before anchoring and choose the shallowest practical position
- Urban environment and shore traffic: the bay is immediately adjacent to Durrës city and the beach is used by locals throughout the day; jet skis and water sports are active in July–August; anchor at sufficient distance from the beach to maintain separation from shore traffic
Rules & Regulations
- FORBIDDEN north of Vlorë: Anchoring outside Durrës and Shëngjin is strictly forbidden and enforced by armed Coast Guard. Use official ports only.
- Albania entry — clearance agent mandatory: All foreign yachts must use a local clearance agent (~€100–150). Call Cristian Marina ahead on VHF Ch 12. Fly yellow Q flag on entry.
- Anchoring fee: Free to anchor. No facilities in the bay itself.
- Maximum stay: 2 days
- Restrictions: Keep clear of the ferry traffic lane N of this position — international ferries to Italy operate at speed through the Durrës port entrance. Do not anchor in the main channel. Overnight use is not recommended — use Cristian Marina inside the port. In any Bora forecast or NE wind conditions, do not use this bay.

Skipper's Tips
- The Roman amphitheatre of Durrës is the finest reason to use this bay — land the dinghy on the beach and walk 15 minutes up the hill to the excavation site; the scale of the structure (2nd century AD, seating 20,000, 20,000 square metres of excavated area) in the middle of a modern city is genuinely striking and the museum on site explains the history of the discovery in 1966
- Use this bay as a morning day stop and return to Cristian Marina for the night — the combination of the amphitheatre visit in the morning and the superior facilities at the marina in the afternoon is the ideal pattern for using this anchorage
- The bay provides a different perspective on Durrës than the commercial port — anchoring here and looking up at the Roman amphitheatre hill above the modern city is one of the most interesting views in northern Albania and worth the effort of a half-day stop
- Monitor VHF Ch 12 continuously for ferry departure and arrival announcements from Durrës port — knowing when the large ferries are moving through the port entrance N of this position allows you to time dinghy transits and maintain appropriate distance from the traffic lane
- If Cristian Marina is full and this bay is the overnight option, deploy full scope from the outset and assign a night watch rotation — do not assume the conditions will remain settled; the Bora can arrive in under 30 minutes and the bay has no shelter from NE
A note on this guide: Data has been researched from multiple sailing sources and is provided in good faith. Conditions — depth, holding, regulations — can change. Always check forecasts and current official charts before visiting. Use a GPS anchor alarm and never rely solely on a guide for navigational decisions.
Sleep peacefully at Durrës South Bay
Safety Anchor Alarm monitors your GPS position continuously and sounds a loud alarm the moment your boat drifts — essential in Durrës where Bora gusts arrive rapidly and ferry wake disturbs boats overnight.
