Durrës Outer Bay Anchorage Guide

Also known as: Durres Roads, Durrës Waiting Anchorage, Durrës Bay E Anchorage

The Durrës Outer Bay anchorage lies E of the commercial port entrance and is used primarily as a short-stay daytime waiting position by boats awaiting customs clearance or a marina berth at Cristian Marina. The bay offers 5–12m over sand and mud with moderate holding and partial W/SW protection from the Durrës headland and port breakwaters. The critical hazard is the NE Bora exposure — in NE Bora conditions (gusts to 70+ knots recorded in Durrës Bay) this anchorage is extremely dangerous and must be vacated immediately for the shelter of Cristian Marina inside the port. This is NOT a comfortable overnight anchorage under any conditions; Cristian Marina is strongly preferred for overnight stays in northern Albania. Use the outer bay only for short daytime waiting in completely settled weather, with full anchor watch maintained throughout.

Recommended Anchor Alarm Radius

90m alarm radius for the outer bay in 5–12m with standard scope. The NE Bora exposure is the defining hazard here — in any NE or N forecast, this anchorage is unsafe, and the alarm will fire under Bora conditions as the anchor drags. Do NOT overnight in the outer bay if there is any Bora forecast or any NE component in the wind. The ferry traffic through the port entrance immediately to the W is continuous and ferries move at speed — maintain 90m alarm to ensure the boat does not drift into the port entrance fairway. For any stay longer than 4 hours or any overnight, proceed directly to Cristian Marina inside the port. The outer bay is a short-stay, daytime, calm-conditions-only position.

The Anchorage

The outer bay anchorage E of the Durrës commercial port entrance in 5–12m over sand and mud. The Durrës headland and port breakwaters provide partial protection from W and SW. The bay is exposed to NE, N, and E — in NE Bora conditions this anchorage becomes extremely dangerous with gusts to 70+ knots possible. Holding is moderate to good on sand and mud — the bottom is flat and anchor sets reliably in calm conditions, but in Bora conditions scope loading becomes extreme and drag is a serious risk. This position is used primarily as a daytime waiting anchorage for boats awaiting customs clearance or for arrivals that find the marina full. NOT recommended for overnight — use Cristian Marina inside the port instead. Depth ranges widely; confirm on echosounder and choose the shallowest practical depth to minimise required scope. Set the 90m alarm and check frequently.

Setting Your Anchor

The bottom at Durrës Outer Bay is primarily sand and mud with reliable holding when properly set.

  1. Check Bora forecast before anchoring — cap clouds over the Dinaric Alps to the NE are the warning sign. Bora gusts to 70+ knots arrive with minimal notice. If any Bora is forecast, use Cristian Marina shore lines rather than anchoring in exposed positions.
  2. Approach slowly and check your depth sounder. At 512m, deploy minimum 7:1 scope (84m chain at 12m depth).
  3. Drop into the wind and pay out chain steadily as the boat drifts back.
  4. Set firmly in reverse — 30–60 seconds at moderate throttle. Use the scope calculator to confirm adequate chain.

Recommended anchor types: Rocna, Mantus, Spade.

Overnight Anchoring & Anchor Alarm

Overnight stays at Durrës Outer Bay are feasible in settled conditions but require vigilance — the anchorage is exposed to NE and N and E winds.

Set your GPS anchor alarm to 90m radius before going below.

Usable May–October as a short daytime waiting anchorage in settled conditions only. The Bora frequency is highest in October–November and March–April — do not use the outer bay in these periods without continuous monitoring and an immediate exit plan. July–August sees highest ferry traffic through the port entrance. The outer bay is a functional position in settled summer weather (June–September) in the mornings before the afternoon sea breeze builds any NE or E component. It is not a destination — it is a waiting position only.

Navigation Hazards

  • NE Bora katabatic exposure — CRITICAL: the outer bay is fully open to NE, N, and E; in Bora conditions gusts exceed 70 knots in Durrës Bay; this anchorage becomes untenable and dangerous the moment Bora develops; any NE component in the forecast is grounds to proceed directly to Cristian Marina inside the port
  • Ferry traffic from port entrance: international ferries to Brindisi, Bari, and Ancona operate through the port entrance at speed on fixed schedules immediately W of this anchorage; the wash from ferries is significant and anchor scope loading in wash is cumulative
  • Depth variation requiring scope management: the bottom ranges 5–12m across the outer bay; greater depth requires more scope and increases the alarm radius needed for safety; anchor in the shallowest practical area and confirm depth throughout
  • Mandatory anchor watch required: this is a daytime waiting anchorage with no overnight capability in safe conditions; a continuous watch must be maintained at all times while anchored here — unattended anchoring in the outer bay is not appropriate
  • Customs enforcement: Albania requires all crew to remain aboard until clearance is complete; patrol vessels operate in Durrës Bay and boarding checks of foreign yachts are routine; have all documentation including passports, boat registration, insurance, and crew list immediately accessible

Rules & Regulations

  • FORBIDDEN north of Vlorë: Anchoring outside Durrës and Shëngjin is strictly forbidden and enforced by armed Coast Guard. Use official ports only.
  • Albania entry — clearance agent mandatory: All foreign yachts must use a local clearance agent (~€100–150). Call Cristian Marina ahead on VHF Ch 12. Fly yellow Q flag on entry.
  • Anchoring fee: Free to anchor. No facilities in the outer bay.
  • Maximum stay: 1 days
  • Restrictions: CRITICAL: Do NOT overnight here in any Bora forecast or in any NE/N wind conditions. Keep clear of the port entrance fairway (W sector) — ferry traffic has right of way and moves at speed. Do not anchor in the port entrance channel. Day use only in settled conditions — proceed to Cristian Marina for any overnight stay.

Skipper's Tips

  1. Use the outer bay only as a brief waiting anchorage while arranging entry to Cristian Marina — call the marina on VHF Ch 12 before even dropping anchor in the outer bay, and move inside the port as soon as a berth is confirmed
  2. Monitor VHF Ch 12 continuously from the outer bay — port VTS broadcasts ferry departure and arrival times; knowing the ferry schedule allows you to plan the port entrance transit to avoid ferry traffic
  3. The outer bay provides a clear view of the Durrës headland and the approach to the port entrance — use the waiting time to observe the ferry approach pattern and plan your entry sequence before moving into the port
  4. Do not anchor in the outer bay if there is any NE cloud build-up over the mountains visible to the NE — cap clouds are the classic Bora warning sign and the Bora can arrive in under 30 minutes once cap clouds form; proceed immediately to Cristian Marina
  5. If anchoring in the outer bay for a customs wait, deploy the full scope immediately and set the anchor with engine reverse to confirm hold before any crew goes below — the flat sandy bottom holds well in calm conditions but it is not a position to discover a dragging anchor by alarm

A note on this guide: Data has been researched from multiple sailing sources and is provided in good faith. Conditions — depth, holding, regulations — can change. Always check forecasts and current official charts before visiting. Use a GPS anchor alarm and never rely solely on a guide for navigational decisions.
