Shëngjin Harbour Anchorage Guide
Also known as: Shengjin, Shëngjini, Port of Shengjin, San Giovanni di Medua
Shëngjin Harbour is the northernmost official Albanian port and the recommended entry point for boats arriving from Montenegro. A small working fishing harbour with limited facilities but adequate shelter for overnight stays in settled to moderate conditions. The inner quay in 2–4m over excellent mud provides the best berth — tie alongside among the fishing boats with fenders and shore lines. The harbour is protected from all directions except NW, which can bring swell into the entrance in NW conditions. Shëngjin is a small town with basic provisions — bread, water, and local market produce — but full provisioning requires a taxi to a larger centre. The harbour is an official port of entry: clearance agent required, VHF Ch 16. The beach 2km S is pleasant. Shëngjin makes an efficient overnight stop on the passage between Montenegro (Bar, Budva) and Durrës, 30nm S.

Recommended Anchor Alarm Radius
40m alarm radius for the inner quay berth — the confined harbour means any significant movement should be investigated immediately. The NW is the harbour's only exposed direction; if NW swell enters the harbour the boat will become uncomfortable quickly but the alarm radius is set for position security rather than comfort. The outer harbour at 70m alarm is appropriate in settled conditions. The Bora (NE katabatic) is the dominant Adriatic hazard — however, the harbour provides good NE protection; the Bora danger is during transit to and from Shëngjin rather than while in the harbour. Do not depart Shëngjin in Bora conditions; the open Adriatic north of Shëngjin towards Montenegro is particularly exposed to Bora fetch.
Inner quay berth: 40m — The inner quay at Shëngjin in 2–4m over mud — the preferred overnight position.
Outer harbour — settled conditions anchorage: 70m — The outer harbour area in 4–8m over sand and mud, usable as an anchorage in settled conditions when the inner quay is full with fishing boats.
Anchoring Zones
Shëngjin Harbour has 2 distinct anchoring zones, each with different depth, holding, and exposure characteristics.
Zone 1: Inner quay berth
- Depth: 2–4m
- Bottom: mud
- Holding: Good holding
- Protected from: N, NE, E, SE, S, SW
- Exposed to: NW
- Recommended alarm radius: 40m
The inner quay at Shëngjin in 2–4m over mud — the preferred overnight position. Tie alongside or stern-to the quay among the fishing boats; space is tight and local fishermen have established positions that should be respected. Mud holding is excellent — one of the best holding bottoms for anchor-assisted mooring. The harbour provides protection from N, NE, E, SE, S, and SW; the NW is the only exposed direction and NW swell can occasionally enter the harbour entrance in NW conditions, making the inner quay uncomfortable. The harbour has no dedicated marina infrastructure — use fenders and shore lines to secure, and be prepared to move if fishing boats require the berth. Shëngjin is a working fishing harbour and the fishing fleet takes priority. VHF Ch 16 for harbour contact.
Zone 2: Outer harbour — settled conditions anchorage
- Depth: 4–8m
- Bottom: sand, mud
- Holding: Good holding
- Protected from: N, NE, E
- Exposed to: NW, W, SW
- Recommended alarm radius: 70m
The outer harbour area in 4–8m over sand and mud, usable as an anchorage in settled conditions when the inner quay is full with fishing boats. Protection from N, NE, and E is reasonable; NW exposure allows swell to enter the outer harbour in NW wind. The outer harbour is a transition area and has significant fishing boat movement — anchor well clear of the main fairway and use a 70m alarm radius to account for swing in current. The mud and sand holding is good but the outer area is less sheltered than the inner quay; overnight use requires stable forecasts with no NW component. Montenegro border is 15nm N — do not cross without completing all formalities at Shëngjin first.
Setting Your Anchor
The bottom at Shëngjin Harbour is primarily mud with reliable holding when properly set.
- Check Bora forecast before anchoring — cap clouds over the Dinaric Alps to the NE are the warning sign. Bora gusts to 70+ knots arrive with minimal notice. If any Bora is forecast, use Cristian Marina shore lines rather than anchoring in exposed positions.
- Approach slowly and check your depth sounder. At 2–4m, deploy minimum 7:1 scope (28m chain at 4m depth).
- Drop into the wind and pay out chain steadily as the boat drifts back.
- Set firmly in reverse — 30–60 seconds at moderate throttle. Use the scope calculator to confirm adequate chain.
Recommended anchor types: Rocna, Mantus, Spade.
Overnight Anchoring & Anchor Alarm
Overnight stays at Shëngjin Harbour are feasible in settled conditions but require vigilance — the anchorage is exposed to NW winds.
Set your GPS anchor alarm to 40m radius before going below.
Best May–October as a functional overnight stop. June–September provides the most settled Adriatic weather windows for the passage between Montenegro and Durrës. May and October are viable but Bora frequency increases in the shoulders — check the forecast carefully before departure. The harbour is operational year-round but winter use (November–March) is only for boats caught by weather; the Bora frequency and intensity in winter makes planned winter passages on the northern Albanian coast inadvisable.
Navigation Hazards
- NW swell enters harbour: the harbour entrance faces NW and in any NW wind the outer harbour receives swell that can propagate to the inner quay; in sustained NW F4+ the inner berth becomes uncomfortable; monitor the forecast for NW component before settling for the night
- Limited quay space among fishing boats: Shëngjin is a working fishing harbour and the fishing fleet takes priority; quay space for visiting yachts is limited and subject to availability; fishing boats depart very early (03:00–05:00) with engines running — ear protection recommended
- Bora NE exposure in outer harbour: while the harbour provides good NE protection overall, the outer harbour anchorage is more exposed to NE Bora than the inner quay; in any Bora forecast move to the inner quay and secure with additional lines
- Montenegro border proximity — documentation: the border with Montenegro is 15nm N; Albanian and Montenegrin authorities both monitor vessel movements in this area; have all documentation (passports, boat papers, crew list, clearance documents) immediately accessible
- Remote location with minimal facilities: Shëngjin is a small town with basic provisions only; if there is a medical or mechanical emergency, the nearest significant resources are at Durrës (30nm S, approximately 5 hours under engine) or in Montenegro; plan passages with adequate fuel and provisions reserves
Rules & Regulations
- FORBIDDEN north of Vlorë: Anchoring outside Durrës and Shëngjin is strictly forbidden and enforced by armed Coast Guard. Use official ports only.
- Albania entry — clearance agent mandatory: All foreign yachts must use a local clearance agent (~€100–150). Call Cristian Marina ahead on VHF Ch 12. Fly yellow Q flag on entry.
- Anchoring fee: Free to berth alongside quay or anchor in outer harbour. No formal berth fees — occasional informal requests from harbour officials; a small fee (~€10–20) is not unusual.
- Maximum stay: 3 days
- Restrictions: Fishing boats have priority on the inner quay — be prepared to move if local fishermen require your berth. Montenegro border is 15nm N: do not cross into Montenegrin waters without completing formalities at Shëngjin first. Do not depart in Bora conditions. NW swell can make the inner quay uncomfortable — monitor forecast.

Skipper's Tips
- Arrive at Shëngjin in daylight — the harbour entrance is straightforward but the approach from the N has shallow areas that require chart attention; arriving at night removes the ability to identify fishing boat positions in the harbour, making berth selection difficult
- Contact the harbour on VHF Ch 16 when 2nm out to confirm where visiting yachts should berth — the harbour master or a fisherman on the quay will direct you to the appropriate position and this avoids blocking the fishing boat fairway
- Shëngjin is an efficient overnight stop on the Montenegro–Durrës passage and nothing more — plan a one-night stay and continue to Durrës and Cristian Marina for any extended stay in northern Albania; the facilities at Durrës are significantly superior
- The beach 2km S of Shëngjin is genuinely pleasant and easily accessible by taxi from the harbour — worth an afternoon stop if the schedule allows before the overnight stay
- The Bora is more frequent and severe in the northern Albanian Adriatic than further S — always check the 48-hour forecast before departing Shëngjin; the open sea passage to Durrës (30nm S) or to Montenegro (15nm N) in Bora conditions is dangerous for all but large, well-crewed vessels
A note on this guide: Data has been researched from multiple sailing sources and is provided in good faith. Conditions — depth, holding, regulations — can change. Always check forecasts and current official charts before visiting. Use a GPS anchor alarm and never rely solely on a guide for navigational decisions.
Sleep peacefully at Shëngjin Harbour
Safety Anchor Alarm monitors your GPS position continuously and sounds a loud alarm the moment your boat drifts — essential in Durrës where Bora gusts arrive rapidly and ferry wake disturbs boats overnight.
