Recommended Anchor Alarm Radius

80m

80m minimum for the 5–10m depth range. Current 1–2 kt means the boat lies to current rather than wind — ensure radius accounts for full swing in current reversal. Busy shipping area: larger radius gives more safety margin. Monitor AIS — commercial vessels cannot manoeuvre in the narrows.

About This Anchorage

Helsingør (Elsinore) sits at the narrowest point of Øresund — only 4km from Helsingborg, Sweden. The outer anchorage is dramatic: Kronborg Castle (UNESCO World Heritage, Shakespeare's Hamlet) visible just north, the Helsingborg citadel visible on the Swedish side, and a constant procession of ferries, container ships, and tankers through the narrows. The anchorage is in 5–10m on sand and mud — deeper than most Danish anchorages. Current 1–2 kt from the Øresund flow. Monitor AIS — this is one of the world's busiest shipping lanes. The town of Helsingør has excellent historic sites (Kronborg, Marienlyst Castle, Danish Maritime Museum), full provisions, and the pedestrian ferry to Sweden for a day trip.

Anchoring Rules

Anchoring fee
Free (anchoring); marina fee approx DKK 190/night
Permit required
No

Restrictions: Øresund Traffic Separation Scheme — stay out of shipping lanes; ferry channel (Helsingør–Helsingborg) crosses every 20 min; AIS monitoring essential; anchor well clear of ferry route; current 1–2 kt.

Hazards

  • !Øresund commercial shipping — constant traffic; monitor AIS; commercial vessels have right of way and cannot manoeuvre
  • !Ferry Helsingør–Helsingborg every 20 minutes — ferry wash significant
  • !Øresund current 1–2 kt (N or S) — boat lies to current not wind
  • !Open to N and NE across 4km fetch to Sweden — uncomfortable in NE wind
  • !Deep water (5–10m) — requires more scope than typical Danish anchorages

Skipper's Tips

  • Kronborg Castle (Hamlet) is the highlight — the guided underground tour (casemates) where soldiers sheltered during sieges is unforgettable; reserve tickets online
  • The Danish Maritime Museum (M/S Museet for Søfart) in the old dry dock below Kronborg is outstanding — world-class maritime history
  • Take the ferry to Helsingborg, Sweden (15 minutes, daily) for a Swedish lunch — stamp in your passport, the smörgåsbord awaits
  • Anchor in 5–7m north of the ferry terminal, bearing 315° from the Kronborg north tower — clear of both ferry lanes and shipping channel
  • Øresund current reversal: watch for the boat swinging 180° when current changes direction — ensure anchor is well set

Facilities

Best Months & Season

May, June, July, August, September

May–September. This is more of a transit stop or a cultural day-visit anchorage — the busy shipping traffic and current make extended stays more challenging than quiet anchorages further north.
