About This Anchorage

Hundested sits at the northern tip of the Roskilde Fjord peninsula, on the Kattegat coast where the protected waters of the fjord meet the open sea. The town has a working fishing harbour and marina, and is the departure point for the historic ferry crossing to Rørvig (the quietest corner of Zealand, recommended by Knud Rasmussen who lived here). The outer anchorage is on clean sand — good holding — but exposed to southerly and westerly weather. In settled easterly conditions it is excellent. Hundested has a good supermarket, fuel, and the Knud Rasmussen Museum (Arctic explorer born here). The Kattegat tidal range here is 0.3–0.5m.

Anchoring Rules

Anchoring fee
Free (anchoring); marina fee approx DKK 180/night
Permit required
No

Restrictions: Ferry traffic (Hundested–Rørvig) — maintain clear passage; fishing harbour — keep clear of working vessels; speed limit; Kattegat tidal range 0.3–0.5m.

Hazards

  • !Fully exposed to S through W — the Kattegat coast here has no offshore protection; move into harbour in SW wind
  • !Ferry traffic Hundested–Rørvig (hourly in summer) — maintain clear passage
  • !Kattegat swell can penetrate from west in sustained westerlies — uncomfortable anchorage
  • !Fishing harbour traffic — working boats have priority
  • !Tidal range 0.3–0.5m — allow adequate scope

Skipper's Tips

  • The Hundested–Rørvig ferry (10-minute crossing) is one of the most scenic short journeys in Denmark — take the dinghy across or leave the boat and go as a foot passenger
  • Knud Rasmussen (1879–1933) — the 'King of the Eskimos' — was born here; the museum in his house is excellent
  • In settled E/NE conditions, the outer anchorage is superb — clear water, sand holding, good swimming
  • Departure point for Kattegat passages to Jutland or Sweden — good weather window stop
  • The lighthouse at Nakkehoved (4nm east along the coast) is worth a cycle — views over Øresund to Sweden
