About This Anchorage

Käsmu is one of the most charming and historically rich small villages in Estonia. In the 19th century it was nicknamed the 'Captain's Village' (Kaptenite küla) — virtually every man was either a sea captain or master mariner, sailing the Baltic and North Sea trade routes. The village of wooden captain's houses remains remarkably intact. The Käsmu Maritime Museum, housed in the former Russian Imperial customs building, tells the story of Estonian seafaring with exceptional depth. Käsmu is part of Lahemaa National Park — the surrounding landscape of boulders, pines, and limestone coast is extraordinarily beautiful. The local legend of the 'captain's ghost ship' (the prohibited winter smuggling runs to Finland) is part of village lore.
