About This Anchorage

Berghamn is one of the classic inner Turku Archipelago anchorages — a sheltered cove between granite islands on the Turunmaa sailing route. The archipelago here transitions from the busier inner channels near Turku to the wilder outer islands beyond Nötö. The mud and sand bottom provides excellent holding, and the granite islands give shelter from north through southeast. The surrounding landscape is quintessential Finnish archipelago — red granite, pine forest, summer cottages visible on distant ridges, and the silence of the Baltic at anchor. An ideal overnight stop for sailors island-hopping between Turku and the outer archipelago.

Skipper's Tips

  • Berghamn is a classic overnight stop on the Turku to Utö route — ideal midpoint with excellent holding
  • The surrounding rocks and islands are excellent for dinghy exploration — bring a shallow-draft inflatable
  • Swim from the boat — the brackish Baltic water here is warmer and calmer than the outer islands
  • Fishing is excellent — perch and pike in the channels; Finnish fishing licence required for hook fishing
  • Depart early for Utö (25nm SW) — the outer archipelago crossing is best in morning calm before sea breeze develops
