About This Anchorage
Utö is the southernmost permanently inhabited island in Finland and one of the country's most atmospheric sailing destinations. The island has been inhabited since the early 18th century, sustained by the lighthouse keeping station and fishing community. The lighthouse (1814) dominates the skyline and serves as a critical waypoint for Baltic shipping. Today approximately 30 people live year-round, supplemented by summer residents and visiting sailors. The island has a small shop, restaurant, sauna, and remarkable sense of isolation at the edge of the Finnish archipelago. The crossing from the inner islands requires careful weather assessment — Utö faces the open Baltic to south and east. A visit here is a genuine adventure in remote Finnish seafaring culture.

Skipper's Tips
- →Utö is a genuine wilderness island — the remoteness is the attraction; plan a stay of at least 2 nights
- →The lighthouse museum is open in summer — the history of lighthouse keeping on this exposed outpost is remarkable
- →Book the island sauna in advance (through the harbour master) — essential Finnish experience at the end of a long passage
- →Fishing around the outer rocks is excellent — sea trout and perch; Finnish fishing licence required
- →The passage from inner Turku Archipelago (Berghamn or Nötö) is safer than approaching directly from Turku — shorter open water section
