About This Anchorage
Örö is one of Finland's most remarkable sailing destinations — a former military fortress island that was closed to civilians until 2015, when it became a national park. The island sits at the outermost edge of the Turku Archipelago, facing the open Baltic, and retains its wartime fortifications, gun emplacements, observation towers, and military roads in extraordinary original condition. The cycling trails through pine forest and along granite coastline are exceptional. The island has basic accommodation (hostel) and a café open in summer. The anchorage between the outer skerries gives reasonable shelter in northerly conditions. The bird life is exceptional — the outer archipelago is one of the most important seabird breeding areas in Finland.
